Two instances of Milkyway running cause Windows Media Player and Winamp to repeatedly freeze/skip. I have games that lag also when Milkyway is running. I haven't seen anything like this since nanohive. Is anyone else experiencing Milkyway trying to be a resource hog?

Not on my G5 Mac running the PPC version of astronomy 1.12, even when running on both CPUs—which it usually does. (BOINC likes to concentrate on one project at a time on this system.) That includes simultaneously listening to music, downloading podcasts, & burning a CD, with iTunes, while also web-browsing and whatnot, last weekend.

Interesting...on my MacBookPro Core Duo, the CPU temperatures routinely run a few degrees cooler under Milkyway@home than under SETI...

i don't run SETI, but use a macbook pro core duo as well, but it seems to get my fans going pretty fast :)

No; I have my preferences set to run when the computer’s in use, to keep apps in memory, and to use 100% of the (dual) CPU. BOINC processes are supposed to be “nice”, backing off for higher-priority tasks (practically anything else), and IME exceptions are rare—and usually fixed in the next version of whatever app is misbehaving. I run BOINC full-time on my aging G4/733 at work, while using demanding software like the Adobe Creative Suite—often several programs at a time—and it never interferes perceptibly with what I’m doing.

As for temperatures, I concur with user C that the SETI@home app (Alex Kan’s PPC-optimized version in this case) makes my G5 run hotter than other BOINC apps do (MW@h’s included) but only by 1 C° or so. That’s at least 10 C° above its idling temperature. The only fan I notice—unless I’m listening for them—is the one that runs when the optical drive is in use.

Both my Macs (I attached my work G4 a couple of days ago) seem to be doing just fine as well.

Misfit is running Windows XP. His account shows one Intel Pentium system and one AMD Athlon; it’s not clear which one was having the problem, as they both have multiple CPUs (real or virtual). We haven’t heard from any other Windows users here AFAICT.

This is how mine is set up. And it's my intel XP system I'm talking about. It hyperthreads so both units have to share the floating point and integer units. If I snooze BOINC while milkyway is running the lag goes away - however within a minute I'll get that error popup.
