Message 36654 - Posted: 18 Feb 2010 | 23:50:42 UTC

Matt has started up some new searches on a different area of the Milky Way and it looks like the server is having trouble keeping up with requests for the new data file of stars. Hopefully things will go back to normal after the new data file has been sent out to most of our users.

We're also in the process of purchasing more RAM for the server (which seems to be the current bottleneck), so hopefully this will help the problem in the future.

I'm noticing that I'm collecting pendings -- normally these clear quickly -- wondering if that is one of the other 'oh by the ways' hanging out there.

Oh well, my computer will eventually ask for more MW work.

It just got 105 Collatz units though.

Looks like it was actually a problem when Matt ran the script to start up new searches. Everything looks like it's running smoothly here on our end now.

My computer still hasn't uploaded anything from MilkyWay and I've carried out a few manual updates. Has the server sped up yet?

If Mw isn't in High priority in Boinc than it won't finish uploading the results until it asks for work again. The server is in its normal state I believe.

Yeah, isn't 'reporting' and 'uploading' work generally kept separate to decrease load on the server? I don't know if it uploads in bulk or what, but..

Anyone having problems just detach and reattach milkyway and the problem should be solved.

Within two hours, I encountered a lack of wus. The message was repeating "no work available". Is there any possibility that the server can't catch up with the exponential increase by Radeon 5000 series?

Everything looks like it's running smoothly here on our end now.

Then why do I keep getting, "Message from server: Project is temporarily shut down for maintenance"?

Because that message was posted on February 19th ... this situation is unrelated.

I suspect everyone at RPI is busily engaged in the work of spring break and thus we might not even get an explanation, let alone a resolution until Monday.

Probably until about 30 minutes AFTER someone back at the project returns from Spring break. After that there will be a message apologising for the lack of attentiveness to the project by the project folks during the break.

So, at a guess -- Monday -- since it is quite apparent that there is no one minding the store this week
