Hello all,

seeing as I leave my computer on most of the time anyways thought I would put it to work:)

so I am running:

Hardware:

Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 900@2.20ghz
on a Toshiba Satellite L355-57915

Memory is 2.8 GiB

For OS I have gone to
Linux Mint
Release 10 (Julia)
Kernel Linux 2.6.35-22-generic
Gnome 2.32.0

Know I have a Intel processor so no GPU crunching:((

So what can I do to get this thing to crunch even faster? (besides get a new computer)

with the preferences page on all the Boinc sites down I can't make any adjustments there.

Is there a way to make it work all 3 of the WU's I have now at the same time?
1 core =6 WU yes?

sol just thought I would say Hi. If you have any suggestions(other than get a real computer) offer them up:) LOL

Dave

If it was a desktop, we would say add a GPU.

LOL yeepers That I would. Is there a way to run 2 bonics at once and have them working different things on the same machine?

Yes you can, but I would strongly advise you dont - at least for the moment.

You will not gain anything by doing so in so far as two instances of BOINC running at the same time would just split the CPU resource between them (in a crude sense) resulting in nil gain compared to doing one task. It is also very fiddly to setup and you should get more BOINC experience before attempting it. A similar spilt of resource would happen by trying to split time between two WUs within one instance of BOINC.

That processor type is a single core with limited processing power, and it would be best to stick to one Project you enjoy and crunch one WU type. Within a short space of time you will get a clearer picture of what the machine can do in BOINC - it will be useful, for sure, but limited on some Projects. Have a nose around and see what you like, test a few of their WUs. Dont try to run on a Project that has multi-thread WUs, (eg Aqua), unless you are prepared to wait 1-3 days for completion of each one.

If you post the kind of thing you like, we could perhaps suggest a few for you as well as here. Otherwise a good start point for a look see at whats around would be the Project list (has direct clickable links) at the bottom left of the BOINCStats main pages:

Thanks Zy,

I was thinking more along the lines of being able to run the specially hopped up clients for seti and MW at the same time since they and when orbit is online are the only ones that have peeked my interest. on the fiddly part would have been easy in windows just make a bonic2 lol but in lenux well that is a different matter. LOL so that project will be put off the list for now then:) Thanks for the input.

will the pos on board video run any projects/ LOL

What is an entry level card that has open cl and double persion.

want to be able to do milkyway.

and will some one sell me one on the cheap :D

plan to upgrade memory to max of 8 at beginning of month unless i can find a good graphics card for about the same price ($100)

It should be able to run Collatz and maybe Moo!, not sure about that, I have just Collatz as backup project for milkyway.

See the GPU Requirements Thread. But I wouldn't go below the HD5xxx series, also low end HD7xxx series GPUs (i.e. anything that is not HD79xx) are not recomended, some of them are even slower on Milkyway than my pretty old HD3850 (see also this thread).

For about that same $100 you can get 16 gb of ram instead of only 8gb!

You will need 4 memory slots for that to work but is what I did in my two newest machines.

Who is "he"? I'd recommend to look into the user's manual of the mainboard and eventually check for BIOS updates. 2GB/slot was few years ago... OK, it can be today maybe on some very cheap mainboards, but I'd actually expect at least 4GB/slot.

It is caused by a bug in 7.0.25.

The fix is available in 7.0.28.
