Hello,

I needed to update my AMD drivers for the OpenCL to run milkyway. I followed the instructions on AMD site. Removed old drivers first, then installed new ones. Milyway runs smoothly again but when I want to use the Catalyst Control Center, it is not working, nothing hapens.
I have .NET Framework SP1 installed so as AMD is telling.
Have more people this issue and has someone an idea to repair this?
Thanks so much.

I have still this problem. AMD released new 12.2 vista-win7 drivers. I downloaded them, removed the previous ones and installed the new one. After several re-doe's of this de- and installations and several reboots, the Catalyst Control Center is still not working. So I cannot make any changes. Does anyone have this seen before and knows where to look for a solution?
Thanks.

After removing the old driver and rebooting you should check the registry if all entries got deleted.
When upgrading to driver 12.1 I had a problem with openCl not installing properly.
Reason was that removing the old driver deleted all old files but left some entries in the registry. After deleting those entries by hand, the new installation worked without problems.

Use a freeware program called Driver Sweeper to remove old driver files and registry entries. Google for it. Worked for me.

I did a remove of the AMD 12.2 driver, rebooted and used the registery sweeper to clean it. I searhed for leftovers of AMD and ADI and removed them. Rebooted agian and installed AMD 12.1 driver. Unfortunately the Catalyst Control Center is still not working.

Double check the download was Driver and CCC, not just the driver itself. There is no reason why 12.1 should not be working, its strange .... there's something basic amiss somewhere

EDIT
BOINC what version? If not 7.X.X change to 7.0.20 due to OpenCL needs (separate issue not related - but may also be a problem later).

This is the one I downloaded and installed: 12-1_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc. dd is driver and ccc is control center. Indeed there is something basic missing. This started when I needed to update to 12.1 for the new OpenCL MilkyWay apps. I did an install of the 12.2 drivers, but after a night running the pc (I thought it did) no ready WU's where reported to any project. So de-installed the 12.2 drivers and used the tips of Len and Spingadus to remove it properly. Reinstalled 12.1 which runs the WU's but no CCC.

Had a nose around .... it appears that there is a problem with CCC crashing on startup. The guys at Guru3D put together the latest driver with the last known working CCC.
I have no idea if this will solve your issue, nor do I know if all support files come down with it. From a security angle you have no worries, its a safe download, I am just flagging up that loading this may not solve your issue - however, if you have a dead card otherwise, its worth a go.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=359755

EDIT: Wait .... that download link is a pain - working on a better solution
EDIT2: Ok got one downloading, I will get the other as well, and repost on a different better down link, will take around 30 mins - bare with me
EDIT3: Uploading to a good link - should be ready around 0215hrs UTC
EDIT4: Its a .rar file, you'll need the rar software or the latest winzip (10 mins to go)

Here is the link to use. The first file below is for Win7 64bit, the second for Win7 32bit

Its a safe download, I redirected one of my domains to make the file available. To open it use rar or latest winzip. The first link shows what is in the file (see the box in the first post on the first link), the second link below is the Win7 64bit file download, the third link below is the Win7 32bit download.

Thanks Zydor for all your effort and time!
I will give it a try overnight when I have more time and the BOINC tray is empty.
By the way the cards are not dead they are crunching MilkyWay and Albert fime with openCL, thus the drivers work, but the ccc will not start so I cannot make any changes to settings.
I let you know if it works.

If still issues download and use Afterburner to control the card:

Hello Zy,

I did a de-installation of the AMD drivers, sweep the register, rebooted and installed the drivers you directed me to. That went smooth with no system crash as with the AMD-site drivers. MilyWay is running smooth, but the CCC is still not starting. I don't know exactly what brand graphics cards are in the system, its a dell alienware, but sure it are not MSI brand. Can I use this software without problem?
Thanks for the help so far.

Usually yes. Problems can occur with non reference designs (ie custom builds by individual card makers). But there are no problems if the card is just a rebranded reference design (eg like the 7970s were on first deployment, the only difference was the logo sticker because AMD would not allow partners to customise on first deployment).

Where issues can come, is when you use unofficial mode to do voltage changes - the latter are a baaaad idea unless you know exactly what its at with voltage changes, burnt cards will follow messing around. In that mode, there are real differences with custom cards, but still reference cards will respond 100% to voltage changes as all have the same type of voltage regulator, custom cards dont.

However, you dont need unofficial mode, leave it alone, and because of that, you are not going to fiddle with out of spec voltage change. Its possible that changing core speed etc may not work in official mode with non reference cards, but that would be unusual. So dont hesitate to try it, if it doesnt work, no harm done to the card. As always keep and eye on the temperatures.

Bottom line .... Stay out of unofficial mode and you should be fine, if the default official mode doesnt work on yours there's no harm done.

You cant get into unofficial mode by accident, so if you dont know how, no worries, it'll never happen anyway, so dont worry about that aspect - just be aware there is a difference, and to stay out of it if you do happen to come across an explanation of how to get into unofficial mode. They did it that way deliberately to stop less experienced playing around and burning a card.

EDIT: I am off to my pit within an hour (I'm UTC time zone), but dont hesitate to post for help using Afterburner, there are many experienced users of Afterburner out there who also help if you post asking for help.

Hi Zy,

The afterburner works, I can now check the temperature, is high but seems normal for this Dell. I don't want the change anything thus I use afterburner only to monitor things as I did with CCC.

However I can't stand it that CCC is not working at my systems. So I installed Microsoft Installation Cleanup and checked what is installed. Well I see a lot of CCC's 3 version, and several AMD programs.
I will delete them next week and then do a new install of 12.2 drivers. See if that works. I will let you know.

Nice catch :)

I had a ferret on that utility, seems like MS discontinued it due to problems. There is a replacement, see link below for explanation and background. I have not used either, so cant comment, but be aware of the MS change.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2438651/

Once you read that see link below to get to the new one - I have no idea how effective it may or may not be.

I had that program on another pc as spare. I used it to remove all the remnants of the CCC. I sweeped the register and rebooted. Then installed the latest ADM package. Unfortunately no joy, the CCC will still not start as neither the help files associated with it.
The drivers run fine as the two 5870's are crunching WM.
So I am out of ideas to get the CCC running.

I just solved this problem for my PC.

found the solution here:
http://www.rage3d.com/board/archive/index.php?t-33862974.html

and here

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/mobility-radeon-drivers-support/186707-problems-installing-catalyst-control-center.html

but for those who are lazy its right below.

Please note I am running Win7x64, with an HD4870 & Cat 12.1, and BOINC 6.12.34

Uninstalling CCC, and then:

1. Check that (Program Files folder )/ATI Technologies/ATI.ACE is empty
2. Check (Windows folder)/Assembly folder to see if there's any files with Public Key Token of "90ba9c70f846762e" (Sort by Public key token to get a easier view). All these tokens should be uninstalled by right clicking and uninstalling.
3. Check that (Document and Settings)/(User)/AppData/Local/ATI/ACE is empty
4. Reinstall CCC

OK I have received feedback that these steps dont work.

Please try the following and let me know. If you delete the wrong registery key, that is your problem. Please be diligent and backup your registery before completing these steps. If you are unsure, then the registery is not the place for you to be.
1. Check that registry locations are empty:
a. HKCU/Software/ATI/ACE
b. HKLM/Software/ATI/ACE
2. Check that (Program Files folder )/ATI Technologies/ATI.ACE is empty
3. Check (Windows folder)/Assembly folder to see if there's any files with Public Key Token of "90ba9c70f846762e" (Sort by Public key token to get a easier view). All these tokens should be uninstalled by right clicking and uninstalling.
4. Check that (Document and Settings)/(User)/AppData/Local/ATI/ACE is empty
5. Reinstall CCC

I tried Paul's actions, but I am not allowed to delete the enormous mess of the
0ba9c70f846762e, more then 60 of them. I don't know how to get the rights it is my own pc paid it myself and I have full control accordingly to windows.
I give in. I am weeks buzy with this and only for openCL, before I instelled 12.X CCC worked very well.
Next time nVidea graphics cards and Linux.

Try booting into safe mode when uninstalling items from the assembly directory of windows.
Also, that it's not deleting the items from the directory, but using the right click uninstall menu option.

Any other problems and it might be that your user account might not have administrator access.

Hello Paul,

That was the trick. I worked 3 hours on the problem with rebooting and rebooting.
I deleted all that was from AMD and ATI, directories and in the register.
Now all is working fine and CCC is working as before.
Also my thanks to Zydor as I used his link for the working CCC from guru3d Zy found for me. Thank you guys, I am a happy cruncher again. Now I need to go sleep asap.
