When I close the screen, the CPU slows downs on Galaxy Note 2. I tried all options and setings. Did someone got it running full speed with screen closed? How?

Much work has been put recently into integrating the previous Android work into the main Berkeley release of BOINC.

Look for v7.0.53 (or later) at the foot of http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Hooo, thanks to showing me that alternative Boinc ARM client. But it can't download tasks on Milkyway as NativeBoinc do. So I can't even try it.

Berkeley is down right now but you can always get the latest releases of Boinc here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=D

Ok, I got it.
When going hot, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will half the CPU Frequency or shut 2 cores from 4. There is no setting to ajust that.
So I managed to avoid tregering that by using 1.4ghz max (vs 1.6) and undervolting it. CPU Temperature is now 55C instead of 70-80C. Now I can run at that speed continuously.
Sad because it can go up to 2ghz.

We all know cold flows downhill, you can try putting a bowl of ice or an ice pack uphill from the device and see if it runs cooler. If so you could then run it faster. You could even put the bowl of ice, or ice pack, on something to raise it up a few inches and then put the device next to it.

Or let a slow and quiet 80mm fan blow at it, runs 24/7 without the need to refill/replace it and also without the risk of water condensation.

Condensation WOULD be a problem!!

I put a static heat sink taken from an old scraped computer on my cell phone (Galaxy Note 2).
Result: CPU at 69C with continuous overclock 1.8ghz x 4 CPU with undervolt 1250mV WITHOUT throttling. I use "performance" governor.

Throttling occure at 80C OR with suddent raise of temperature over 60C.

Does that mean the v6 with vfp2 doesn´t work?

And one little tip for local network configuration (wifi) on nativeboinc i wanna give you.
If you are changing your network configuration settings(on the window you can set that in kilobyte per second). i recommend to set that in byte if you watch in the logfile after changing you know what i want to say.
the app doesn´t calculate the kbyte per second up in bytes per second.
So if that is set wrong the connection slows down.

A beginners question:
I installed native boinc on my nexus one hour ago. Now I see the progress bar color switching from green to yellow sometimes.
I did not find anything in the native boinc wiki. Is there anywhere info available about that behaviour?

It sounds to me like your tasks are repeatedly suspending and resuming. I found this to be the case when I first started running it on my mobile phone.

Check your local preferences (Menu -> Manage Client -> Local preferences) and see if any of those could be causing the problem. When I set mine up, I believe the computing setting "While processor usage is less than..." was set at "0.0" That pretty much meant tasks never ran because the phone was almost always doing something.

You may have to adjust other settings to get the BOINC client to behave in such a way that's acceptable to you, especially temperature and battery usage. Good luck!

Cheers,

MarkR

Hi Mark,

thx for the quick answer!
Yes, you're right, my preferences are set tu use only 50% of cpu-time; I'm new in the Android world and I have no experience about cpu temp and things like that. To be on the shure side ...
Will look now for an app that shows the cpu temp.
Anyway, is there someting to read about that or is it simply a 'learning by doing'?

Cheers,

Alexander

Glad to help, Alexander... At least I hope I'm helping! :-)

Yes, you're right, my preferences are set tu use only 50% of cpu-time...

Be careful... If you are describing the "Use at most <xxx.x> % CPU time", that's a different preference than what mentioned in my last post.

Anyway, is there someting to read about that or is it simply a 'learning by doing'?

For me, it has been mostly "learning by doing" and reading posts in project forums (like this one). There's some interesting information about BOINC on Android at the Berkeley website. There's also a link that goes to a discussion about the impact of BOINC on Phones.

The more I use it the more I like it!
Modern skin, acceptable performance. There is still one thing I do not understand. I could not find an app that shows the cpu temp; they all show the batt temp. Is it unusual in the android world to check the cpu temp?

Regards,

Alexander
