Hi all,
Just decided to move my 7950 & 7850 to the same case and am running into some snags. With just the 7950 everything works fine. Once I add the 7850 all I can get on screen is a black screen with a white underscore flashing in the top left corner. Has anyone else run into this issue and know of a fix? Should I be looking in the BIOS, slot positions, drivers??

Thanks!

Do you have the line <use all gpus> in your Boinc directory? If not try this one:
<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
<skip_cpu_benchmarks>1</skip_cpu_benchmarks>
</options>
</cc_config>

The skip cpu benchmarks line is for older Boinc versions that had issues sometimes, remove it if you are using the latest release version. As for HOW to use it, just cut and paste the above in NOTEPAD and then save it as a txt type file named cc_config.xml in the directory C:\program files\boinc and then restart Boinc.

IF this doesn't fix the problem then you will need to make a 'dummy plug' too. They take about 30 seconds, LITERALLY, but you will need to go to the store for less then $5 worth of parts. Here is a link showing how to make one:
http://www.overclock.net/t/384733/the-30-second-dummy-plug

Only use ONE 'dummy plug' and plug your monitor into the top gpu. During startup Windows has a bad habit of turning a gpu off, to save resources, if there is nothing plugged into it. So either plug a 'dummy plug' into one of the gpu's or plug in a second monitor during startup and all should be okay. The 'dummy plug' provides the resistance needed for Windows to THINK there is something there so it allocates the resources.

Those solutions will only help him if he can get the computer to boot.

What size is the PSU in that machine, it might be underpowered.

Very true. Thanks Mikey, they will help when I finally get it booting.

The PSU is a 1200 that is only a year old. Doubt it is that. I'm going to mess with the slot configuration now. Tricky board for it though, not many options available.

GOOD GRIEF, I missed that entirely, WHOOPS!!!
Try removing one gpu and seeing if it works, then add in the 2nd gpu.

I was just doing that. Pulled the 7950 and put the 7850 in the 1st slot and I only get a black screen. Sounds like I've got some problems with my 7850 card. Very odd.

Sounds like it, do you have another machine to try it in?

I do...it would be a major pain to pull it apart though. I just tried it in the other slots in the computer I was setting up with no progress. I know the card worked about 6 weeks ago but it did sit out on my desk for about a month outside of an antistatic bag. Hopefully that didn't kill it.

I have some sitting around too and they don't seem to show any ill effects after sitting, so hopefully yours will come back up.

13.4 blows - nothing but problems for me on my end. 13.1 is excellent and I currently do not recommend updating to 13.4. I am, however, seeing a lot more computational errors using BOINC 7.0.64 and 13.1. Not sure what the deal is there..?

I had a great deal of errors on Rainbow using 13.1 and then each and all of the 13.xx drivers. I am now getting error free output using 12.8 (on a x64 Win 7).

Forum discussions indicated that AMD changed the OpenGL part of the driver on 13.1 and problems have since shown. I don't know if that is relevant.

It might be worthwhile downgrading to 12.8, but make sure all the bits that are left after the normal uninstall are removed before reinstalling.
Go away, I was asleep

Interesting! I was unaware. I will make the change to 12.8 on my main "computational error" machines and see what happens. Thank you John. :)
