Message 59795 - Posted: 3 Sep 2013, 19:02:46 UTC

I have always put Milkyway as the priority for boinc to run, but since August 25, my computer has yet to successfully run any jobs. I have rebooted thinking that it may be caused from that, but nothing seems to be working. Einstein@home and Seti@home appear to be working just fine.

The really strange thing is that Boinc keeps grabbing Milkyway@home jobs and will run them for a very limited amount of time and then they go away.

Has anyone else had the same or similar experience that can help me figure this out?

Some of your problems are with the 1.36 units go to the News section and read the thread on those, LOTS of people are having problems.

As for the others I don't know but have some guesses...are you the Admin on the machine or just a user? Are there multiple users, each using their own logins on the machine, often at the same time? If the answer to either of these is yes that could also be part of your problems.

When I looked at your units I saw this for alot of them:

Did you install Boinc using the defaults or did you specify directories etc?
The units are very short ones so maybe you could change the time to checkpoint the units out to 900 seconds, or 15 minutes, instead of the default 1 minute increments, that may help too.

I know you can't use your gpu at MW but are you using it Seti or Einstein? If so then one other thing, are you leaving a cpu core free for the gpu to to use while it crunches? If not change the cpu to only use 99% of itself, which will leave one cpu core free for the gpu. Then run a few units and see what happens, I checked your pc against another person who ran the exact same unit and had not problems and your pc's are similar enough that you should not be having problems. Are you gaming or doing anything cpu or gpu intensive else while the pc crunches? If so stop gaming, or whatever, for the next 30 minutes, exiting out of all the gaming stuff, and see what happens.

mikey,

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Ill admit I am not the most computer savy, so Im not exactly sure how to follow your instructions. Im relatively new to Boinc and for the most part have just run it in the background. I do not game on this computer, but do occasionally run things like Photoshop and Illustrator.

If you dont mind me asking, how do I go about changing the cpu to use only 99% of itself? Also, how to I change the the time to checkpoint?

If I am asking questions which have already been elsewhere, I am sorry and feel free to point me to those if you would rather. I sincerely appreciate the help.

also, I have another computer which I would like to run, is there a location for tips in general on how to get your computer to run Boinc programs faster? I see a lot of people crunching crazy amounts, just not sure how I can get closer to that. This computer is slower than the other one that I plan to also use. thank again!

We ALL started out once where you are now...I DO NOT MIND HELPING!!!

Down by the clock click once on the up arrows, inside you will see a starlike thing, double click it and it will open into the Boinc Manger showing your tasks. Click the Tools tab and then click on computing preferences, inside are several more tabs that can help you tweak THAT INDIVIDUALS PC'S settings of Boinc. Click on the processor usage tab and the 2nd box up from the bottom is where you change the cpu percentage to 99%. Now click on the disk and memory usage tab and change the box that has a 60 in it and talks about checkpointing tasks to 900. It is in seconds so you are changing it from once a minute to once every 15 minutes. Click the ok box at the bottom of the page and things should change right away.

As far as your using photoshop or illustrator they only matter if you are running gpu units too. To help figure this out you should now be back in the Tasks tab inside Boinc Manger, look down the list, the completed units should be at the top and the currently running units should be just below that based on their percentage of completion. IF you are running any gpu units they should have a ( and then some numbers and word and then a ) after them. This would be showing how much of your cpu and gpu you are using to crunch that particular unit. The gpu should always be 1, for instance mine right now says
"Running (0.784% cpus + 1 ATI GPU). This means my pc is using just over 3/4 of one cpu core to keep the gpu fed and running. The graphics card, gpu, can only crunch, it can't feed new units to or take completed units from the gpu, the cpu must do that. In some cases the cpu also feeds new and takes completed partial data to and from the gpu as it needs it. IF you see the () after the Running then you ARE running gpu units and your use of Photoshop or Illustrator could be a problem depending on how intensively you use the software. If you are taxing Photoshop or Illustrator to the max then yes your gpu units are slowing down the whole process. IF this is true then we can go thru the steps to stop Boinc when either Photoshop or Illustrator run, or even both of them.

If you have any more questions PLEASE ASK, I know the answers to some things but not nearly all of them!! But I am sure others will jump in to help too as needed.

thanks for that, I changed the settings as you suggested and a milkyway@home popped up almost immediately and after running for a few seconds went away still. I have no clue what has changed to make this not work all of a sudden.

also, a einstein@home is currently running (0.5 CPUs + 1 ATI GPU)

I do not run the cpu units here, so can't answer directly but think it is more of a unit problem. MW should NOT be sending you GPU units as your gpu is NOT double precision which MW REQUIRES.

That IS a good thing, Einstein can use your gpu just fine!!

maybe my home computer will be more capable of running milkyway units, shame that milkyway isnt sending any units that I can compute, but you are right, Einstein and seti are still running. Thanks again

Elliot -

You might try going to the Projects tab, select Milkyway, and then click on Reset Project.

I know this doesn't tell why you are getting the errors you are, but like a computer re-boot, sometimes thing get fixed for no reason.

I tried to reset the project and and that also didnt seem to fix the problem either. I am not sure what else to try at this point.

You might wish to try a complete detach and reattach. That sometimes works when a reset doesn't.

thanks for the pointer swiftmallard. I tried this as well and have yet to see any new jobs show up. Its really a bit frustrating as I didnt change anything on my end and suddenly it stopped working, which makes me wonder if anything I change at this point is going to make it work. I hate to do so because I like the project, but I may have to just give up on the Milkyway

Elliot -

Did you try suspending the Einstein and Seti projects (and any other projects you have)? There might be some reason the scheduler is giving other projects a much higher priority.

I think you have gone to Tools->Computing Preferences and made sure everything under all the tabs is set for minimum restrictions. Some will be 0 (zero), some will be 100%, and a few just need a reasonable number.

1) Are you not downloading tasks?
2) Are you downloading MW tasks and they are not running?
3) Are you downloading tasks, running them, and they end with an error?

I think it is 3) from some earlier comments in this thread. But then you wrote "no jobs show up".

wb8ili,

I may have said the wrong thing, as I mentioned Im not all that savy with computers or boinc and am simply just trying to get it to run.

However, today, it suddenly is running again and completing tasks, so seems that for now it seemed to have fixed itself or maybe there was something wrong with the files they were sending out which was causing errors.

I am getting INSTANT errors from my AMD 5870 gpu that used to work here just fine! It is a 32bit XP machine and works just fine on PrimeGrid and Collatz!!

You mean for me, yes I stopped MW from getting more tasks as it was just going to trash them anyway. I tried last week and went thru more then a dozen, trashing them all instantly, I didn't want to do that again.

I put more pc's on here yesterday and promptly trashed a bunch of them, all of them used to work here in the past but don't now. NO changes on my part except for the Windows updates...hmmmmm. Oh well other places to fish and all that!
