I have a dual core 3 Ghz PC with an Nvidia GPU.

Is it possible to tell if the GPU is being used?

The icon in the System Tray has options for Snooze and Snooze GPU, so BOINC is aware of the GPU.

Yes it is rather easy to tell if your GPU is being used.
Switch to the Tasks tab in BOINC Manager. Note you may need to change tt advanced view for this. Then in the list of tasks CPU tasks will display a status of "Running" and GPU tasks will display something like "Running (0.04 CPU + 1 GPU)".

I'm not sure if your 8400 GS meets the requirements for this project. You might want to check out the thread Updated GPU Requirements

Ah, yes that is the problem. Thanks for the speedy reply!

MilkyWay doesn't support your card, but other projects do.

David, I have had several 8400 series cards over the years. They still outperform some older quad core CPU's but are getting to the point where modern CPU's are more efficient. I still use the GPU on some of mine, but can tell you that some projects just demand too much for them. If it is your primary display, I would not recommend using it as you may experience the drivers crashing regularly when BOINC suspends the task. There are fewer and fewer projects supporting this card as it is one of the earliest CUDA capable cards made. Moo! does well last I checked. BitcoinUtopia is a horrible option for one if you pay for the electricity. However, the points it will score will surpass any other project. It will certainly still run on other projects like SETI & Einstein, but I have found those projects to be a little harder on the cards than some of the others.

I see that you have an 8400GS. IIRC this was the medium quality out of the 3 versions. There was the 8400, 8400GS, and 8400 GS. Some of the mobile ones had less the 128MB video on them. Some were 8 CUDA cores and some were 16. Most are 8 though. Since yours has 512MB of memory and the card has a small number of cores, I would certainly not try to run more than one work unit at a time at any of the projects.
