Message 65518 - Posted: 22 Oct 2016, 13:14:22 UTC - in response to Message 65513.

Radeon 280X is best in Double Precision work - all TOP computers have this specific GPU.
It is however one of the Least Efficient per W for Single Precision work.

There are two projects that require Double Precision support MW@H, and PrimeGrid. Not many people want to use cash, just to grind prime numbers.

I dedicate my 280X to MilkyWay@Home, and I'll buy new efficient GPU for Single Precision work (either GTX1080, or most likely Radeon 480).

Once upon a time I was flamed that I wish for old, almost ancient CPUs to be excluded from MW@H. It was said that we need all FLOPS that we can get. Riiight... and now we specifically ignore GPU users requests for working project... because what?

Exactly. I bought the 280x to use for DP work. I use a 970 and 1070 for SP (currently E@H). The 280x/79x0 cards are also good collatz crunchers but that's just a numbers calculation.

I am not upset but Peter is giving the complete wrong impression that there is plenty of WUs to go around and the servers can get them to users. Many people run multiple projects, many dedicate a piece of hardware to a single project. Either way it doesn't change the fact that MW can't keep hardware busy.

M&H has only just made it possible for fast GPUs to do WUs at all. Be patient! Or find another project that works well on your card to do in the background. Or accept that it will have a rest sometimes. It won't use much electricity when it's idling.

Still having problems with Milkyway@home
I use update and pull in tasks, later on I find no milkyway tasks running and no tasks to run and 40 tasks to report. Again three manual UPDATE runs will clear all waiting to report and download 30 to 62 tasks to process. Suggestions??

Maybe BOINC is more forceful when asking if it's user-started? And the shortage of tasks means it doesn't send them on every auto-request.

Server status page is having a meltdown/breakdown. Also no work units...

Figures its Friday.

I can see thousands ready to send on server status. Mind you my computers don't seem to be getting any recently, they're all doing SETI instead.

Hey everyone,

We actually turned the server off for a little while to take a peak inside. We are looking at making some hardware upgrades. Sorry about that.

Hello Jake and all

New guy here......just wanted to let you know my 'user average' jumped from ~3200 on 26 Oct to 14,500 today, 28 Oct.

I have changed nothing.....looks like your change made a difference here.

Glad to be with you all.

Hi Jake,

You need to think about a maintenance period like Seti@home for clean up and purge validating tasks.
"SETI@home is temporarily shut down for maintenance. Please try again later."

When you do this we know that day we switch sub projects and Milkyway running smoothly after maintenance process.

Appreciate for your efforts and waiting good news.

Hey Rymorea,

Thanks for the idea. Once I get some stability improvements rolled out, I will look into making a maintenance checklist and then determine frequency/time requirements to finish it. With that, I can start to schedule some of it.

For now, we are kind of on a development cycle where we are pushing hotfixes almost every day to the server so it doesn't make sense for right now.

Any news on when the potential memory upgrade will take place?

Why is the validation queue 3.2 million and rising? Is this a problem? Will it clear when a hardware upgrade is done? Are credits delayed?

Hi everyone,

does anyone experience similar problems as i do?

Hardware, i7 3930k, not overclocked, Asus Rampage 4 Formular, 16GB 2133 memory and one R9 280X from Asus.

about 2 weeks ago, the connected display goes black when running Milkyway@home, and the computer still seems to run. When i am connected from another PC to this one via the Boinc Client, Milkyway is still runnging, but all the tasks are stuck.

I run 4 GPU-WUs at the same time, using the app_config.xml file.

Milkyway is running alongside Cosmology@home, which only uses the CPU.

I switched the GPU (with the same model), changed the Power supply Unit and completely reinstalled Windows 10. Still the same problem.

It worked all fine until 2 weeks ago, and i didn't change a thing.

When i run games on this computer, there are no problems either.

I will try the 16.10.3 hofix driver now, but my hopes are very low.

Does anybody know the cause of this problem? Or has experienced something familiar?

Computer with the problem:

Thank you all for answers.

Yes, I know this problem. I have this on my PC with the HD58xx card, when running Einstein and MW mixed. Sometimes a message like 'AMD driver reset after driver error' is displayed. Other systems accept these settings, but with older drivers.
The 'HD58xx-System' is a 'repaired win7' after many crashes and an abstruse mix of programs and browser add on, cleaned but never prooved to be as 'out of factory'. This is why I never payed too much attention on it. But works with 4 MW simultanously.
Check my systems for driver versions, currently all my systems work fine with MW.

Hello !
Milkyway doesn't send me task or very few
when requesting new task for AMD/ATI GPU,
the log says: "server can't open database" and no tasks are sent.
Does anybody knows what is wrong ?
Thanks

I'm getting no response from the server at all when requesting tasks, but I see from the server status that half the validation backlog has been cleared, and there's a lot more nbody tasks ready to send out. Perhaps they're trying to catch up?

2 day and 4 day? What? My GPU completes them in 15 seconds, and my CPU in 15 minutes to 2 hours.

I do see one on another computer made out of spare parts that says "2 days remaining", but it's wrong, it's done 32% in 1 hour 7 minutes on an old CPU.
