Hi all,

I'm running a few boxes w ok hardware (2x dual Xeon 5670, 1x dual Xeon 5630), so plenty of cores, and also nvidia gpus in each. Two of these are hackintoshes, and are therefore unable to run opencl versions of the MW apps (see here). Are there any plans for opencl apps for Mac?

Many thanks in advance,

There used to be such apps, but I think Jake said the Mac they used for builds died. So the new versions for Mac are delayed.

Or Mac CPU apps? Haven't seen any since Nov. 11. :-)

I would like to make a suggestion:

Since Linux (Ubuntu) is free and available and supported fully, why don't you just dual boot your hackintosh instead of waiting for a miracle?

I saw this tread and was going to propose that no-one should run these heavy tasks on MAC to start with. They overheat and are very expensive to replace and with closed channel service and support should be avoided as much as possible, unless you are just an Apple sheeple that follows the heard..then just go ahead.

I understand the reason for having a hackintosh and I use to have one too.

Best regards

Very valid point, and well taken. However, I let my machines crunch while I use them. And I use commercial software that is simply not available for Linux. Use Windows? Hm, er, no thanks (except for this one machine which is now *only* crunching Milkyway, and doing nothing else). That simply seems a waste to me, sorry. I would much prefer to have all 3 of my boxes running Milkyway, rather than have one dedicated to Mikyway alone, and the other two doing Einstein whilst I use them productively, simply because there is no MW for Mac/GPU.
And in terms of overheating; I haven't heard of these problems occuring first-hand, and certainly haven't experienced these kinds of issues. So I'll continue waiting for a miracle :-)

Thanks for your well meant comment, again, it's a valid point but unfortunately not applicable to me.

1. The abbreviation for a Macintosh computer is Mac. MAC is the abbreviation for Media Access Control. They are not the same thing.
2. I've been running these "heavy" tasks on my PPC & Intel Macs 24/7 since the original SETI without a problem. If anything, Macs are overbuilt.
3. Calling other people names (sheeple) is childish, if you can't be respectful of other people perhaps you should get off the internet.

Have a nice day! :)
