I must say I support the general consensus, expressed here, that what this project does, within it's own confines, is for this project. Relationships with SETI in common credit goals is not an issue. The real thing is that the science and exploration gets done.

Well I'll say that the new app is fast. Down from 11 hours for the long units to a little under 9 minutes for the same units. Massive speed up.

As for the credit issue. I think D.A. doesn't want everyone coming over to MilkyWay for the credits and leaving the other projects without crunchers. But then he seems to want everyone crunching over at Seti.
Never surrender and never give up. In the darkest hour there is always hope.

I think it's a gross misrepresentation that Dr A wants everyone to do SETI, in fact, I believe, he doesn't want any single project giving more incentive to draw crunchers to a specific project to the detriment of other projects. That would be a failure of the BOINC concept. He is after the ideal, which doesn't exist, but he has every right to ask the projects to consider what they're doing taking into account how their actions impact other projects.

Fair enough I reckon.

BTW....love the optimised app. Thanks Milksop!

Live long and BOINC!

A little under nine minutes is it? But still four hours on my Mac for which no new app is available. Not much point in my continuing to crunch here is there?

Was pushing some participants away from this project part of the aim of releasing the new app?

It doesn't really change the credits too much if that is why you are conserened.

And the "New" app is still pending.

Well, the good news is that the optimized application is very fast -- lots of work gets down.

The bad news is that the work is getting done faster than new work can be created so getting new work is going to be problematic.

That sure didn't take long did it?

Notice that credits are now pending as well and the transitioner is 1 hour behind.

Right -- but when work units are processing something like 50 times as fast you would expect this sort of thing to happen. Perhaps with the new applications coming from the project in the next week, we will see an increase in the work unit size (processing time) so as to reduce the load on the server. I really don't blame anyone on this -- these guys are not a huge resource project and even the big guys run into problems like this. It is impressive what a relative handful of active users (myself included) can do with the optimized application.

I didn't change the number of cores since I was sharing with CPDN and Einstein@home 50/50 with MW on 2 of my computers and the 3rd is a single core running MW by itself. If we run out of work both other projects will just pick up the slack and the wife's computer probably could stand the break on her single core. <Grin>

PS... so I'm wondering what was the trick and what was the treat......

See post 5686 in this thread. 216 credits per hour. I call that a change even if you don't. But more importantly, why would I waste four hours worth of electricity for a calculation that others can do in three to twelve minutes? It was different when only one or two people had the speedy app but when it is generally distributed then those without it might as well not bother.

We'll see what next week brings.

That's totally absurd. There is no reason to think every group running a project on the BOINC platform has to meet some arbitrary credit award scheme.

These projects stand alone, the fact that they use BOINC is no more material than the fact that most PCs run on Windows. BOINC is freely availabe for anyone to use it the way they see fit. If they want to award 1000 times the credit of the other BOINC projects, so what? There is NOTHING that the megalomaniac David A can do to enforce his credit scheme.

Having swapped to the new MW Milksop driven software I went to sleep with all 4 rigs firing.

I woke up late, and saw they were all idle, and after much fiddling (but not looking here or the server status), pulled in Einstein and got some work done on MW.

If I had been patient I could have seen we had no work. I know the BOINC messages tab says the same, but, having just woken I an still thick.

Also the pending list is long.

So, it is down to Einstein to keep the rigs busy in the interim.

Did you restart your BOINC?

Don't rename the new file. The included app_info.xml tells BOINC to use the new file, so if you rename it nothing will be found and it presumably defaults to downloading the old app again.

For whatever reason I had problems switching the apps on my Linux quad, too.
I only copied the new app and app_info.xml to the project's directory but BOINC 'insisted' on crunching the WUs with the old app.
So in that case a quick detach and re-attach helped.
Make sure to set MW to "no new work" immediately after re-attaching to prevent BOINC from downloading the old app again.
Then quit BOINC, copy the files and restart BOINC - voilá: crunching with the fast app finally! :-)))
Lovely greetings, Cori

No project is giving credit in isolation that allows their stats to be imported by the various stats sites. If a project operates in complete isolation then I agree, they can do what they like, but as soon as their stats start getting reported at the stats sites then they need to play fair in respect to the other projects. Nothing absurd in that, in fact quite reasonable.

No. The stats sites can import and display all the stats they want.

The issue is that there is no need to compare stats from one project with any other projects. Maybe that makes the stats sites un-needed, but probably not. The good ones display stats from other non-Boinc projects as well and have no burning need to compare those. It's simply a convenient way to track your stats on all projects in one place.

Each project can choose to either make the stats files available or not. It is their choice. As soon as they choose to, then they should have to play by the same rules (or close enough). If not then it would be like each state in the US having a different currency where 1 Texan dollar may not be worth the same as 1 Georgia dollar etc.
