1) Message boards : Number crunching : Not able to download work for AMD GPU (Message 67192)
Posted 3 Mar 2018 by IKI
Post:
Same here: 0 workunits for a brand new host since 22.february.(and no executable download) Tried quite everything I could think of. Nothing helped. As other projects work fine I finally just suspended Milkyway.

But it gets worse: my older host who did not have such problem till now also reports 0 tasks avaiable since today. Thought it could be the recurent DB problem but looking at server status it seems fine..
Now that starts to be worrysome and annoying!

Btw I have no reason to suspect my older host to be in any way unreliable. And of course even less so for the brand new host..
Yet either this bug has to do with the new reducing workunits to unreliable hosts feature or with the 21.feb DB upgrade.

I think that after now >10 days since the first bug reports it would be nice to have somebody knowledgable look into it and give some kind of answer.

Last update, and in the hope of narrowing the problem:
-I again deleted milkyway, re-attached the project. The milkyway folder still being empty after that I pasted the contents of the milkyway folder from my working old host.

Same result. Still reporting 0 tasks.

I have already an app_config.xml because I pasted my usual setup in the milkyway folder.
Otherwise it is empty.

Yes the database was unavailable for a while. And indeed my old host can now again get new tasks.
However this is entirely a different problem from the fact that NEW hosts seem not to be able to get either masterfile nor any task at all at the moment.
I really hope the admins can look into it...

Thanks, resetting the project did not help.
I do get a message that the master file was successfully downloaded however the milkyway folder in programdata is still empty and I still get the 0 tasks available message.
Will try your other suggestion to copy the master file from the older host when home.

My bad: only the new host (setup today) exhibits this behavior. The old one does get new tasks.
The master file also did not download and the milkyway folder is created but empty.
A bit weird..can it be that the server update causes a bug with new hosts or should I try something else on my side?

Also not receiving any ATI workunits on my side, just like Andrea Tosatto:

26/02/2018 00:45:10 | Milkyway@Home | Requesting new tasks for AMD/ATI GPU
26/02/2018 00:45:12 | Milkyway@Home | Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks

And this on a new host as well as on an old one. Already since 14h or so like this. (Had anyway no internet before that so I am not sure when the problem started but it seems like the server update is creating a new problem..)
9) Message boards : Number crunching : WU restart every 20% (Message 67071)
Posted 12 Feb 2018 by IKI
Post:
Ok, things are back to normal. GPU at 100% load. WU being processed in the usual time.

For future reference here what seems to have solved it for now:
-disinstalled the GPU drivers
-used the AMD clean up utility
-reinstalled the drivers but this time an other version:15.301.2601.1002-whql-firepro-windows-retail.exe

Let's hope that this time it won't revert by itself to this strange abnormal behavior...

Thanks but I saw it and the situation seems different this time.
First as I said the GPU sits idle most of the time, waiting for something apparently at these 1/5 increments.
Second the tasks I had few days ago were already bundle5 tasks. And were, as you would expect, loading the gpu to near 100%.

As a small update:
Looking closely at the output of my old normal WU and these new, weird behaved ones I see one difference:

This line: "BOINC GPU type suggests using OpenCL vendor 'Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.'" is nowhere to be found in the old good WU.

Also there is a bunch more of these:
"BOINC GPU type suggests using OpenCL vendor 'Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.'
Error loading Lua script 'astronomy_parameters.txt': [string "number_parameters: 4..."]:1: '<name>' expected near '4'
Switching to Parameter File 'astronomy_parameters.txt'
<number_WUs> 5 </number_WUs>
<number_params_per_WU> 20 </number_params_per_WU>
Using SSE4.1 path"
In the old WU this was only there at the start.

Not sure if that hints at anything though...

I too started to get this behavior suddenly a few days ago.
No idea why. The computer was left alone..(Win10, AMD Ryzen 1700X, Firepro S9150 GPU)

Before: 4 MW tasks in parallel, 95 sec GPU time and 25 sec CPU time each
Now: (if left to 4 tasks simultaneously) 500 sec GPU time and 170 sec CPU time.

Behavior:
GPU is at 0 load and just idles for a while at 0% (or 20, 40, 60 and 80%) ; then actually starts to work and sprints to the next 1/5 step. Rinse and repeat..
CPU seems not to do much anyway.

I tried a reinstall of the Firepro S9150 drivers. No changes.
Restart of the project. No changes.

Any ideas??

Here an extract of a typical WU:
