Hi Peter,

What I find an absolute nightmare is trying to get AMD drivers to load when I also have NVidia GPU running:-( Dunno what the secret is but its eluded me..

I didn't think that was possible, I'd never try mixing the cards. In fact I've even had problems when replacing a Nvidia with an AMD, if you don't remove the Nvidia driver first, it goes mental when it sees an AMD card and gives a blue screen. And since the Nvidea card was dead, that proved very difficult. I only use AMD (the above was a friend's machine I was trying to repair) since Nvidia like to overheat, they're less powerful for the money, and I don't much like their drivers!

Humm, I've NEVER liked AMD drivers, they have pretty much always been behind the curve until recently, I see that finally they have decided to adopt cuda for compute tasks as well.
I have until recently always run amd cpu's and motherboards, but have recently branched out into intel cpu's, old xeon cpu's and motherboards since they are fairly cheap 2nd hand, never could afford brand new intel kit:-)

Next year when AMD's Zen cpus and skt4 motherboards are out I might get another AMD setup, but not with amd gpus..

For most compute projects NVidia gpus work fine MW@H is one of the few where those shine. And I run 3 projects and on 2 of those NVidia works great. This is the only one where they perform less well than amd's gpu's. And until recently they were less power hungry:-)

Thats the other thing I liked about my old 280 card.... It just worked with BOINC! Simple.
Now days because I'm running a 390, every times there's a change (like now) I've got to try and remember how to fix the app_config file! Hate it!

What I find an absolute nightmare is trying to get AMD drivers to load when I also have NVidia GPU running:-( Dunno what the secret is but its eluded me..
I have a 390 lying around unused because I haven't been able to get it working in conjunction with my GTX980ti's or any other Nvidia gpu.

I also miss the ability that E@H has to select how many tasks run in project configs.

Anyways I already have a electricity bill problem, had to pay 100 quid a week for the last 2 weeks to get my bill down to a manageable size:-/ So I'm not gonna bother with the 360, it can languish in a corner:-)

Hi Arivald,

Its only the person[s] that generate an error that doesn't get credited for it.

That's not really true. ALL people that took part in such a bundle DON'T get credits. If not, then please explain why I have "Can't validate" WUs? I have 10 invalids per day, NOT due to problems on my end. The same problem applies to every R280X. That work is wasted, I don't get any credits, so in essence we have wasted electricity = money.
Well,
[Would you really like to have a single Host with 3 R280X (that takes almost a 1kW from the wall), have all invalid results cause some other Host wants that?
I DON'T!

This needs to be fixed!

Well,
[1] I don't use AMD GPU's, mine are NVidia.
[2] As to BOINC's anti trashing code, I wasn't aware it even existed
[3] I've not checked on who trashes what on MW@H, I agree if someone repeatedly
trashes WU they shouldn't get any until they stop doing so.

[4] Unfortunately projects using BOINC still persist in allowing anon users who cannot be contacted. I believe there is NO valid reason to allow anon crunchers,
its a license for abuse, of both the project and those who are contactable and do crunch with more valid than otherwise tasks.

[5] There always going to be tasks that fail to validate, for some reason, computer malfunction, driver problems or power failure whatever, but if you cant
even contact such a user, there is no way of stopping them carrying on trashing tasks. Other than possibly the facility you mention if it can be implemented server side.

However given the recent problems with MW@H servers, and the number of folks complaining about lack of WU and server errors I don't know if implementing that facility might not be a great a problem as the trahers:-/

Hi Arivald,

Actually that was logical. It wouldn't be easy to make task validation per chunk. There is such validation method in ClimatePredicion.net, but I believe it's rather custom, and only because each part takes 2 days or so :)

IMHO, fixing issues with Hosts that all generate only invalid issues will go a long way towards decreasing invalid results as a whole.

Having a bundle end up as a computational error isn't that important, it will be resent to others so anyone winging it will still get a valid result [if it completes ok and IS valid].

Its only the person[s] that generate an error that doesn't get credited for it.

Hi,
Just found the drawback on the new bundl5's:-/
if the app processes all of the bundle BUT fails on the last of the 5, with
a computational error.. ALL 5 are lost, not just the one that actually failed.

Since the entire bundle is labelled as computational error..

But its survivable:-) Rather loose the odd bundle that way than not get ANY work at all.

Hi Jesse,
Thanks. Another speculative possibility that I should have thought of is that the Windows Nvidia GPU client might be running the work units in the CPU instead of the GPU because it is using as much CPU as a single core CPU client.

On my rig BOINC shows 0.719 cpu + 1 GPU.
running on a GTX980ti.. That's the same cpu usage as before using 1.39..
But the 1.42 app takes 9 min 55 sec for the same type of task..

I think its taking a rest between munching on a slice of WU:-)

So I don't think its an increase in cpu use.
The CPU is AMD 9590 at 4.7 Ghz...

I've been sent tasks that have estimates of over 6 hours:-( Taasks that used to take 32 seconds under 1.39 now take 9 mins plus..
The estimate for 1.42 bundle 5 taks was apparently 10 mins, but took 38mins to do 50% then went back to 0% and carried on with an updated estimate of 6 hours plus..
I am NOT a happy bunny:-(

Therefore I have aborted ALL bundle 5 tasks which for a cache set to 1 day I got several days worth of bundle 5's hence the abort, I'm prepared to accept a 9 min completion under 1.42 for those modfit's that used to take 32 sec under 1.39. but not for longer than to complete those tasks sent me.

Thereafter unless MW@H reverts to 1.39 for those tasks I will suspend MW@H until such time as the situation has been resolved. Given that the credit return on tasks taking 32 sec was about 26cr I'm far from pleased if those same tasks now take 9 mins plus for probably the same return of 26cr. Let alone for tasks that apparently will take many hours to complete.

I run my computers at cheap[ish] rate for only 7 hours per day, and cannot afford an extra £256 per month to run 24/7.

So I'm hoping this situation can be resolved as soon as Jake is fully rested up:-)

Hi,
Well looks like the problem persists almost non stop.
Yesterday I got 9WU..
I've gotten into the habit of trying to see if the site is actually UP, then trying to get WU..
However its pretty much 'cant open database' no work available' or an endless 'hang' before a 'cant contact' message.
And there seem to be quite a lot of WU waiting validation.

Does anyone have any idea when the current problems will be overcome?

Hi Jake,
I am playing with server settings so I am restarting the BOINC daemons a bunch. It's all good no worries.

Jake

Best of luck with that, hope you can find the problem ok. I noticed a load of MySQL errors whenever there's an upload problem, and the web site is messed up and putting out 3 or 4 MySQL errors about lines xx etc

This is totally daft!!
Until today I could complete 28 GPU tasks, upload the results and get a dozen or more WU in return.

Now I can get sweet FA, because the server is telling boinc to backoff for 55 mins plus. And My rig is therefor processing zilch from MW@H a
instead of processing an almost constant stream of WU.
Manual update is impossible due to the backoff. So far I'm loosing several hundred WU due to this shambles.
There was NO limit on the number of MW100 tasks allowed, now its max 13!!
ans the server stats page reports all ok. HaH, ok mu foot!

Maybe someone should just put the setting back as they were? And fiddle during working hours so any misconfiguration gets sorted out promptly.

Hi Folks,
Well guess what... Bleeding Win10 upgraded on me yesterday, shouldn't have been too much of a problem, BUT MW@H servers were down, so I didn't have any MW@H tasks..
Today with MW servers back up, I get major error messages that MW@H cant see my GPU.. and tasks being aborted left right and center..

Took me a while to figure it out, the dratted upgrade only loaded 1 ccopy of the driver, for the 1st gpu and left it at that. Had to re-install the NVidia drivers. then restart BOINC and lo and behold now the other gpu exists..

Point to bear in mind if Win10 does a major upgrade, reinstall your drivers or its quite possible some of your gpu's will disappear for whatever project..

Hi Barry,
Status STILL unchanged at 1:30PM PDT Sunday.

Perhaps, since it seems pretty obvious that the maintenance process has encountered some unexpected issues, some one from the project might provide some information for folks here regarding a revised plan.

Yeah, and it would have been quite nice if someone had bother'd to put out a 'notice' to all users that MW@H would be undergoing work over the long weekend.

A note on the home page doesn't reach everyone, certainly not in time to take precautionary actions like an increase in cache to cover the downtime.

Hi Folks,
seems as if the servers have decided to have some time off:-) Outta WU and none in sight!
Well its a long weekend where I am, so I guess I'll just have to give one of my GPU's a new assignment for a bit..

Anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this mess?
