Howdy Sarge!!

How many total tasks are on the computer that is "communicating"?

BOINC is constantly updating every single task in the queue whether it is actually running or not. If there are too many (and the number varies depending on the speed of the computer), BOINC has to pause to make its constant updates to the disk.

Alternatively, if something besides BOINC is grabbing too many CPU cycles, BOINC will also pause to "communicate" with the client.

It has become a real problem for some of the major CUDA crunchers at SETI; these crunchers sometimes have thousands of WUs in the queue.

Dell uses a standard connector, but switch some of the wires around. I'm sure you can find the pinouts on the web, or maybe even at the Dell site.

Download one of the optimized apps and read the README file.

Not without adding an app_info file to the mix. Then you can use the "w" parameter on the cmdline.

I've tried these tricks and I'm still only getting 1 WU at a time. this is really annoying that my GPU stops when it finishes a WU then has to wait on a new one to come in. can my cache be set higher?

What is your cache set at? If it is longer than three days (might be 5 now that the deadlie has been extended), BOINC worries that you won't make the deadline and only downloads one WU at a time.

As a test, lower you cache to 1 day and see what happens.

I am not having this problem.

I have the switches set to CPU=No, nVidia=No, and ATI=Yes, on WinXP Pro (32b), Catalyst 8.12, all machines are using the same app_info file...

<app_info>
<app>
<name>milkyway</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>astronomy_0.20b_ATI_SSE2_amd.exe</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<file_info>
<name>brook32.dll</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>

<app_version>
<app_name>milkyway</app_name>
<version_num>20</version_num>
<flops>1.0e11</flops>
<avg_ncpus>0.05</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>1</max_ncpus>
<coproc>
<type>ATI</type>
<count>1</count>
</coproc>
<cmdline>w0.9</cmdline>
<file_ref>
<file_name>astronomy_0.20b_ATI_SSE2_amd.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>brook32.dll</file_name>
</file_ref>
</app_version>

</app_info>

I think the only change I made was setting the "w0.9", I have no problems getting/requesting work, every minute or two it asks and receives work.

My computers.

I hope this helps someone!!!

I had that problem with my 4870 with Cat 8.12 after upgrading BOINC from 6.6.20 to 6.10.17. I uninstalled the Cat 8.12 and installed Cat 9.5, then BOINC saw the card. I then uninstalled Cat 9.5 and reinstalled Cat 8.12 (for stability) and BOINC still saw the card.

I've just acquired a second Radeon HD 4850 and stuck it into my crunching box:
An Intel Q6600 with 2 GB RAM in an Asus P5B Deluxe, now with two Visiontek Radeon HD 4850's (previously only one).
No crossfire or anything is enabled, as I don't believe I want that, I just want two, separate cards, doing crunching (I do this with two different nvidia cards in my primary desktop and assumed I could do the same with ATI cards).
However the secondary display shows up in the drivers under the hardware tab as "Disabled Adapter", and I don't know how to enable it :/

You need to attach a second monitor or a dummy plug to activate the second card.

Hi Debs,

It looks like you're throwing out errors, You may have the wrong ATI app installed. I had this happen a week or so ago when I upgraded BOINC.

What version of Catalyst are you using and which ATI app did you install?

Related question: a quad with 1 ATI card is limited to a 24 WU cache. If another ATI card is added is the cache doubled to 48 WUs or is the machine still limited to 24?

Still limited to 24. :(
