21) Message boards : Number crunching : GPU info has gone missing (Message 35157)

The GPU information on host pages has disappeared. You can see what I am talking about here:

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/top_hosts.php

It was there yesterday AM, but gone today.
22) Message boards : Number crunching : many server upgrades...still need app_info? (Message 35090)

I've read about several server upgrades recently. So do we still need app_info.xml for ATI crunching? Or is the server now taking care of it natively?

It's not done by the server quite yet. Anthony said he'd be working on it this week, so hopefully you'll see a news post about it soon.

Thanks for the update.

Has the server been upgraded yet, so that it sends ATI tasks natively (without app_info.xml)?

Any progress on updating the BOINC server software?

Probably won't happen until early next week when the guy in labstaff who has been working on that with us is back from thanksgiving break.

Got it. Thanks for the update.

It looks like we may have a problem with the hard drive controller, because we took the new drive out and it seemed to pass all the diagnostics just fine.

I've started things back up and we're going to be keeping an eye on it, but it looks like we may have to order more hardware.

Any progress on updating the BOINC server software?

I thought the apps already existed, and the hold up was the old server version? I misunderstand?

Sure would be nice to be able to get ATI tasks naturally, instead of with app_info.xml. Just a suggestion.

No rampant work fetches?

With 6.10.5, I had 5 of 17 machines with that problem. With 6.10.6, I have one machine with that problem. So it's still not 100% fixed.
31) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC 6.10 support with ATI (Message 29516)

BOINC now supports ATI GPUs.
The client detects them and manages their work queue as it does for NVIDIA GPUs.
This will be in the 6.10 client, which should be released in a month or so.
The server code now also accommodates ATI GPUs.

In addition, the coprocessor model has been extended
to allow jobs to use a fraction of a GPU.
For example, a job that will at most half of a GPU's processors
and at most half of its RAM should be specified as using 0.5 of the GPU
(this is done in the app_plan() function; the fraction in general
will depend on the characteristics of the particular GPU).
The BOINC client will try to run multiple jobs on a GPU
if their usage fractions total 1 or less.

Milkyway@home will be offering an ATI app fairly soon.
I encourage other projects to investigate this possibility also.
Let me know if any questions or problems.

Any chance the project could just make the tasks run longer, or bundle multiple tasks per WU, or...?

w00t, sign me up! Just been waiting to get my 4870 1GB rolling. I was waiting on AI because they're working on an official app last I heard, but Milkyway will work too! :-D

I have an ATI Radeon X1900 in my Mac. Two questions.

1) "...that means HD38x0, HD4670?? and HD48x0" What the heck does that mean? Which cards/chips are we talking about?

2) Will this app work on Macs?

My MacBookPro C2D T7700 is finally back down to 3300-3400 cpusec/wu, like it was back on .07 versioon, and my iBook PPC G4 1.33 MHz is still hanging in there around a bit over 9000 cpusec/wu.

Having said that, My MBP should be down around 1000 cpusec/wu, based on the comparison between the same two computers running the optimized v8 for SETI. Is the SSSE3, and SSE2 in place on the MW 0.12 app? I'm not a programmer, but it seems to me the optimization for the MBP should give me the same results as it does for SETI, and approach the results the MS XP folks are enjoying.

Ah! A Team MacNN mate. I gave 10M credits to that team before moving on.

But I will say this about the intel mac apps: They should all have at least SSE3 optimization. Even the very first Yonah (Core Solo) that Macs ever had, are SSE3. So theoretically, the STOCK OSX Intel app should be at least as fast as an optimized SSE3 app for Windows. The idea is that there is no need to make it compatible with any lesser chip, like you have to with the Win apps. So while stock Win apps are handicapped by having to support Pentium I, stock OSX Intel apps are not.
