1) Message boards : Cafe MilkyWay : Clean Energy for Crunching (Message 66085)

Like me, many people here are probably concerned about the amount of power they use and its contribution toward climate change. I just recently found a new power company, Arcadia Power, which has allowed me to switch over to 100% renewable energy (indirectly). You would still be receiving the same electricity from your local power company, but Arcadia matches your usage with investment in wind farms and solar, the idea being that you would essentially be "carbon-neutral" in your electricity usage.

If you're interested in checking it out, here's a link that will save you some money on your first bill from Arcadia.

Just added a Geforce 210 into a PC without on-board video. Looks like it is not supported by Milkyway. Tried to download some tasks, and am not getting any. I'm just checking to confirm that this card will not work here.

Thanks.

I also monitor my power usage and I've noticed MW 1.02 draws quite a lot of power. I really don't know why either, other than it seems to max out the utilization of the card.

P.S. Old PC is it set up right ? Too many inconclusive for my liking ? ? ?

Don't worry about the tasks that result in "Validation Inconclusive". These tasks nearly always validate eventually. I believe everyone gets a lot of these (I have 64 at the moment) and looking at your PC, none of these seem to be ending up as invalid.

I can't find the thread anymore, but I think it was explained to me once that it just designates a result that is a bit different from what the validator was initially "expecting".

Yes, I'd be happy to share. This 7870XT is great but for the fact that it tends to run a bit hot (as compared to my 7950 at the same speed).

Looks like that thread is only for MW Separation (Modified Fit) from your criteria, right? I've posted my 5 most recent tasks at the 213.76 level.

Now that my 6950 has been swapped out for a 7870XT, I seem to be able to crunch MW 1.02 again. Three validated thus far. None had a computation error while running. Currently on Cat 13.9.

Edit: My 7950 now seems to be able to successfully complete 1.02 tasks as well. Previously, they would always fail on this card also. Cat 13.9 is the same driver I was running before I removed the 6950, so changing that card out of the machine is the only thing different between then and now.

Yeah, I've never had a good experience when just using the Catalyst uninstall options. Usually results in weird behavior and occasionally BSOD.

I use the AMD Cleanup Utility Mikey mentioned. It does the trick for me. Looks like you're running Win 7, which means it should work for you. I've seen reports of bad things happening with it under Win 8, though, as a heads up.

(P.S. I managed to get my hands on a 7870 XT, so my DP performance should be back up to speed shortly.)

You know if you have a 7870 based on the Pitcairn core it'll be slower than the 6950?

Seems I didn't do enough research before I picked up it. It is a Pitcairn. Oh well, it's faster than the 6950 on some other projects and I'm planning a new low-cost build I can plug the 6950 back into anyway.

Does anyone know if this project or any other BOINC GPU projects benefit from overclocking a GPU's memory? I've been playing with my cards (HD7950 and HD7870) and have a nice stable overclock on the core speed but I don't know how/if memory overclocking would benefit GPU computing.

Thanks.

Yea I ran about 1/2 a dozen MW 1.02 WUs, & every 1 of those errored too!

Which drivers are you running?

I'm running 13.9.

The link was just to the errored WUs to show I was getting the same error the OP posted.

The 6950 is the card I'm running on MW at the moment with the 7950 on Einstein. The 7950 has the same errors on 1.02 tasks, though.

I'll be swapping the 6950 out for a 7870 soon. Anyone having issues with that card and MW 1.02 tasks?

Just ran 11 MW 1.02 WUs on my 6950. Every one of them resulted in a computation error.

Installed a 5850 yesterday to replace a 4870, now I notice I'm getting loads of errors with MW 1.02, as you other folk have discovered.

Unfortunately (for diagnosis reasons) I also update the driver when I swapped cards, the 4870 was on 13.1, my 5850 on 13.12 [edit] nm I see Randall's tried 13.1 on his 5850s).

Btw I personally don't buy someone else's earlier comment that not leaving a free cpu core can cause problems, yea it'll slow it down but I don't believe it'd cause errors, it didn't with my 4870.
Rather this seems to be a problem with MW 1.02, 58xx, 69xx & 79xx(?).

Is there a way to stop just that app for now?

Yes, you can deselect the MW 1.02 app in the project preferences in your account page. This way you will only receive Separation and Separation (Modified Fit) runs.

@Randall

Let us know what you find out if you remove one of the GPUs. I also began seeing a near 100% fail rate with MW 1.02 after installation of a second GPU (actually a re-installation of my 6950 after upgrading to a 7950). I've tried everything I can think of short of removing a card.

I don't know why removing a card would help, though. The system doesn't seem to be struggling for resources. I cut out out CPU tasks entirely for a while to see if that made a difference, but the MW 1.02 tasks kept failing while the Separation runs went through without a problem.

Some MW 1.02 WUs came through today even though I have only Separation runs checked in my preferences. Of these, roughly half seemed to process alright. The others resulted in errors as usual. Still, this is the first time in quite a while I've seen ANY of those WUs successful. No changes to my setup. The MilkyWay@Home site shows my machine as having two HD 7900 series cards when in reality it's one HD 6950 and one HD 7950.

Didn't realize I had my PCs hidden. Fixed now. I only run MW on the AMD/ATI machine. I'm using Catalyst 13.4. I do have my cards overclocked. They never error out on Separation runs - only the the MilkyWay 1.02 WUs.

I am also having a problem with every MilkyWay@Home WU failing on my machine as well, though the Separation (Modified Fit) runs complete successfully. I have both a 6950 and 7950 in my rig.

Well, I don't really know why, but my speeds seem to be constant again. 7950 running at 1200 MHz without dropping and completing Separation (Modified Fit) runs in under a minute each. (I've stopped crunching N-Body WUs since roughly half result in a computation error for me.)

Here's what happened: I was running PrimeGrid Genefer World Record on the 7950 when I had a display driver crash. I suspended the WU and switched to Milkyway thinking I'd give the card a bit of a break for a few minutes and see if it continued to act funny. What I found was that the card is now keeping it's speed up at the full OC value instead of varying between that and 850 MHz when crunching Milkyway WUs.
