I get the same error with my 6990s when using 13.9 drivers. I have been using 11.12 and these work fine.

4) Message boards : Number crunching : Credit drop since starting of the new batch of WU (Message 55921)
Posted 23 Oct 2012 by Phil
Post:
I have three 7970s and two 6990s. On the 6990s the new WUs give about the same credit per time interval (or at least they would if they didn't crash all the time). On the 7970s the run time is roughly the same, but for less credit.

I think they are both set to 1 day. I have tried various setting and it makes no difference. It rarely gets more than about 5 minutes work at a time and when it runs out it sits there doing nothing for ages. Now that there are so many errors it seems to defer for even longer, like several hours. Since these new WUs have started my output is less than half what it was before and this is mainly due to the errors causing boinc to sit idle for hours at a time.

It is possible that the remaining errors are due to outdated BOINC applications or GPU drivers. So far, every erroring computer that I have looked at (which is not all of them) has outdated GPU or BOINC versions.

I'm still looking into the problem, but if you are having errors it wouldn't hurt to update your drivers and/or BOINC app and see if that fixes the problem. Please let us know if it does.

I have tried various different drivers and BOINC versions and things have not improved. With older cards in particular the older drivers tend to be better - faster and more stable. The 7.x versions of BOINC are also crap for this project because the scheduler causes clients to sit idle half the time.

Yeah run time has increased about 10 seconds on my 7970s and the credit has gone down.

Also all the computation errors cause the boinc manager to stop requesting work. Each time I get an error it seems to increase the 'Communication deferred' time so it ends up going from 60 seconds to several hours.

I have had two BSOD this morning caused by ntoskrnl.exe on a system that has been stable for months so maybe these new WUs are the cause.

If you click "your account" at the bottom of this page then go to "Computing preferences" and you have two settings in there called
"Maintain enough tasks to keep busy for at least" and "... and up to an additional"

I assume you are taking about CPU WUs? Im not sure what the limiti is on these because I use my CPU on other projects and only do MW on the GPU. The problem here is we are only allowed to cache 40 WUs and these are done in 30-60 seconds so the cache doesn't last long at all even when it is maxed out. When I can't even get it to fill the tiny cache we are allowed it will run out of work in like 5 mins if it can't connect.

I have it set to 2 days and yet it still doesnt ask for more. The maximum this project allows is 40 WU per GPU core which is only 20-30 mins work. So I would have thought since it is always going to have less than 2 days work it would always request work when it finishes as WU but this doesnt seem to happen. If I manually make it keep asking until it reaches the server limit which is 160 WU (4x40) then it runs 150 WU before it connects to server then server only gives 24 back. All i want is to try and keep near the maximum 160 WUs cached to cover short term loss of internet connectivity on my end which occurs now and then.
15) Message boards : Number crunching : Work fetch in BOINC 7.x (Message 55218)

So I have been using 6.12.34 for quite a while and been happy with how it fetches work but it seems to suffer badly from memory leaks and will always be using 1GB+ after 24 hrs. I have upgraded to 7.0.28 which I know has a new scheduler/work fetch system but I just can't get it to work as I want.

On my system with 4 GPUs I can have a maximum of 160 WUs which is about 30 minutes work, so obviously I want to keep as near to this maximum as possible. BOINC 6.x would connect to the project quite frequently and hence always keep near the maximum WUs. BOINC 7.x only seems to connect when it has nearly run out and so never builds up to the 160 WUs cached because the most it ever gets back from the server in one go seems to be 24-25 WUs.

Is there any way I can get the behaviour I want in BOINC 7?

On the positive side the memory usage issues seem to be fixed in 7.x

Have a look at this thread http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=2779 there is some mor einfo on there. Personally I still can't fix this issue on my 6990s. I tried fiddling with polling mode and wait factor but i made no difference except to reduce GPU usage and make WUs take longer. I am running catalyist 11.9 on this system and while the 12.x series drivers get rid of the high CPU usage, I get constant BSOD with them so they are no good. 12.3 drivers seem fine on my 7970s though and I get normal cpu usage and no BSOD.

First off let me start off by saying I'm new to SETI@home. Found out about this the other day when I was watching SCI.

If you look at http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/7000/7970/Pages/radeon-7970.aspx#3 it shows that the 7970 is able to do 947 GFLOPS Double Precision compute power but when I click on properties for the task that's using the card it shows a number between 625-640 GFLOPs/sec.

Should it be 947 GFLOPs/sec or closer then what I'm getting now?

Looking at some of your tasks it says "Estimated AMD GPU GFLOP/s: 3789 SP GFLOP/s, 947 DP FLOP/s" which seems right

For my 7970 it says "Estimated AMD GPU GFLOP/s: 4608 SP GFLOP/s, 1152 DP FLOP/s" but then mine is overclocked.

I was getting high CPU usage (one CPU core per WU) with 11.9 drivers but it is ok with 12.1, I just hope it doesn't BSOD again like it did before with 12.1

Which are the best drivers to use? I have tried 12.1 and 11.9 and keep getting BSODs with both. I had 10.5 before I think but that was too old and wouldn't work with the new app. I have a 5970 on Win7 64
