I just noticed the same thing happening to my MacBook C2D, OS X 10.6.4, BOINC 6.10.58. Activity monitor tells me the nbody unit is using 185-190% of the CPU, and only one unit is running.

So based purely on hosts that are crunching both MW and SETI. MW is returning 1.3 times as much credit as SETI.

No! ...based purely on Intel hosts running Windows XP that are crunching both MW and SETI...

My Intel based Mac with OS X is returning significantly more credit from SETI than from MW. The MW "optimization" for Mac OS X is not nearly as efficient as the SETI optimization in the AK V8 app. This tells me that the Mac compilation must be using a poor compiler, incorrect flags, or both. It's too bad the project "irritated" Crunch3r enough that he doesn't provide us with better optimized apps for the Macs.

It makes me wonder where it leaves all those claiming that no project awards higher than SETI. And well done Travis for a good credit pitch.

Here's some info for you: Not all CPU/OS combinations give the same results.

The SETI version is the optimized AK version; the MW is also supposed to be optimized. This comparison is why I put my Intel Macs back on SETI full time - it's a waste of my time and electric bill to run MW at these credit levels.

That's why we're using reported CPCS...

Sorry, I don't get it right now... what is CPCS standing for?
(I am no native English speaker so some abbreviations just puzzle me. ;-)))

Based on the size of the numbers, I think it means Credits Per CPU-Sec, or credits per cpu-second.

Travis:
The v14 didn't improve the Intel Mac OS X apps by anything. Still taking roughly 3322/3417 cpusec on my MBP C2D. This equates to a maximum theoretical possible of 561 credits per core per day, or 1122 credits total on MW.

Using the V8 optimization on SETI (which has been around for a long time), this same machine has a theoretical possible of 1205 per core per day, or 2410 credits per day total on SETI. My current RAC there is 1630, but then, this is my main computer for work and 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, it has major use.

At the speed that v14 gives me on MW, with the 41.09/39.84 credits per WU, I'm basically even with SETI. Now that you've cut the credits in half, you're forcing me to put MW into the "run only when SETI is down longer than 3 days" category.

So long - I hope you check my math and see what you've accomplished.

My MacBookPro C2D T7700 is finally back down to 3300-3400 cpusec/wu, like it was back on .07 versioon, and my iBook PPC G4 1.33 MHz is still hanging in there around a bit over 9000 cpusec/wu.

Having said that, My MBP should be down around 1000 cpusec/wu, based on the comparison between the same two computers running the optimized v8 for SETI. Is the SSSE3, and SSE2 in place on the MW 0.12 app? I'm not a programmer, but it seems to me the optimization for the MBP should give me the same results as it does for SETI, and approach the results the MS XP folks are enjoying.

There is definitely something wrong with the OS X version for Intel.

I have four computers doing MW:

333MHz iMac PPC G3 OS X 10.3.9 ~30500 cpusec/WU
1.33GHz iBook PPC G4 OS X 10.5.6 ~ 9100 cpusec/WU 4 times faster clock, 30% of the imac time, altivec helps a bit
1.67GHz MacBookPro Core Duo OS X 10.4.11 ~ 8100 cpusec/wu 5 times faster clock, 25% of the imac time; I would expect around 6100 cpusec, based on clock speed alone. If I remember correctly, it used to actually take in the low 4000's, because of SSE2 and others(?)
2.4GHz MacBookPro Core 2 Duo OS X 10.4.11 ~ 7200 cpusec/wu 7.2 times faster clock, 23% of the imac time; I would expect around 4200 cpusec based on clock speed alone. I think it used to take around 3600.

My conclusion is there is definitely something lacking in the Intel Mac compilation.

You have to enable test applications in your preferences. If you go to the "Your account" page on MilkyWay, click "Computing preferences", then "Edit preferences" near the bottom. Check the box for test applications, save them, then force an update to MW from BOINC. That'll download the new preferences and allow you the new applications.

As I said in my previous post, I changed preferences to allow test apps to run, then restarted BOINC. I just now did an update on MW, and it did nothing other than continue to crunch using v1.22 app.

The first thing I would suggest is to go to http://calbe.dw70.de/mb/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=53&sid=8368cf67fef91c0a8f6efd2db53e197f and download the correct optimized app. The standard issue app is quite slow in comparison to the optimized on. Crunch3r has done a good job on this for us.
