From years for MW It's the best bang-for-buck..

3x7970 costs less then a half of a Radeon VII and give the same credits (about 1400-1500k)..

the downside is 3x power consumption (3/350W x gpu), a bigger psu needed and 3x heat to cool.. and with fans spinning always near to 100% they need to be clean and replace when needed (but it's a problem of all gpus)

I installed the first clients . It's too early to evaluate the improvements but in the next days i'll keep monitored logs and RAC

thanks for your help.. really appreciated for me and for the community..

A quick followup.. since i installed the modded 7.15 from Joseph Stateson my RAC increased consistenly of 8-10%.. No more idling.. all gpu back to work 24/7

Thanks Joseph for your work

Now we still hope in an official fix (but wait will be easyer)

I used VS2013 to build a new version of boinc "7.15.1" The boinc people have put together a nice package for building windows and also Linux.

The latest version available for download is 7.14.2

Where can i download these new binaries?

Can you please detail the setup process?

Setup a 2nd gpu project with a zero resource share so when MW runs out it will get tasks and your gpu won't be idle while waiting for MW to refill the cache. PrimeGrid and Collatz are two projects that almost always have tasks, at PrimeGrid you can pick wu's that run very quickly like the MW wu's do and at Collatz if you do use the optimization codes the wu's will run much faster as well.

This is just a workaround, not a solution.. developers must fix it

This is for sure a server-side misconfiguration, in 15years of boinc it never happened with any other project

when you ron out of WU the first deferred communication is always more or less 1.40minutes.. in this first stage it uploads the latest results (and don't downloads anything)

then begin the second deferred communication of more or less 12minutes (can't remember).. the gpu is idling and then since no results to report, the downloads of 300wu begin

this loop is always the same on all hosts.. next time i'll run out of WU i will post the exact times..

I seem to do the work units in around 100 - 140 seconds for both my 1080 and 2080. And around 90 seconds for my 1080 Ti.

Milkyway needs a strong FP64 GPU.. I don't have any nvidia but only AMD to compare.. a Radeon VII can complete 4WU in 40-45secs (10-11secs each) and a Radeon 7970/280x can complete 3WU in 100sec (33secs each), a 7950/280 needs 3-4 secs more

Yes, this was reported in May. From the last result there needs to be a 10min period of no requests until the clients can get more work.
https://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=4424&postid=68441#68441

I'm about to setup a script to turn off networking for like 11min, resume and do a project update, allow for 30min or so then repeat.

That's not true.. if you report immediatly the last results and wait the first deferred communication interval of 1minute and 30seconds the new workunits will arrive..

Automatic:

This idle time can be manually minimized.. but this isn't the solution.. reported results must be replaced with new workunits.. not wait until the queue is empty and then wait for timeouts and then download a full stack..

I tried the reccomended settings (1+1day) but situation is the same, this was from some minutes ago but some considerations..

The problem is not the idle when the queue is empty, the problem as highlighted is that when results are reported new workunits were not downloaded until queue is empty..

THIS IS THE PROBLEM, not the idling at empty cache.. If cache was refilled (3 results, 3 new WU) there will be no problems of empty queue

With a Radeon VII i can crunch 2WU at same time in about 20sec.. a queue of 300WU will dry in more or less 50mins.. and every 50mins i have 10-15minutes of idling..

Cache is set at 10+10days but it was 1+1days and before 0.1+0.1.. no difference for me on any host

Probably problem is less noticable with slower gpus but for high end gpus penalty is of about 20-25%

Sorry for OT , but i'm still experiencing on all my host with various boinc versions a delay in retrieving new workunits.

All clients requires cache of result to be empty and some minutes of delay before retrieving new workunits. With fast gpu such a Radeon VII it's very frustrating..

I'm experiencing this problem since months ago and it was already reported from other users in the past. When will be fixed?

With new gpu runs everything is looking fine and as usual

Looking at statistics the problem was general and i wasn't the only, almost everyone had this drop

But with new wu seems to be ok

Thanks but this is something different..

the queue is empty since yesterday evening.. usually i can download about 2-300 wu per gpu (only when queue is empty as the issue you explained) but since this night the queue is completely empty and i always have the message "Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks " exept sometimes when downloads 2-10 workunits per host..

Same here.. about 14000 validation inconclusive.. we have to wait

Validation Inconclusive WU are steadily decreasing.. about 5500 in this moment..

There is always a beginning with 0 wingmans.. But is more evident if everyone run out of work and everyone start again from 0

There is no reason to panic.. this kind of validation queue is absolutely normal and that's why if you stop crunching today you continue to receive (decreasing) credits in following days..
