1) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC 6.10.6 released (Message 31424)

Reverting back to 6.4.7 after my "lovely" experience with 6.10.6. :(
It failed spectacularly once it discovered my ATI card and immediately tried to run CPU only projects on the card... Needless to say, it wiped out all of my tasks and now I have to troubleshoot my video card. It's going to be a long, long time before I try one of these GPU-focused BOINC releases for a while.

W00T! Back again! But I lost all of my RAC (it was a couple hundred too), and there's no work so I can't put my profile back. :(
I wonder why our accounts were deleted anyway...

[edit] Crap! I lost my "join date" too... :( [/edit]

Here's the one at our observatory (photo courtesy of Dr. Bill). It's a Meade LX 200 (.4 meter) with a 3.5 inch Questar guide telescope on top.

We actually have a problem like that with our campus observatory. It was built so long ago that the campus has since built up around it. Now we have problems with the dorm towers and the football stadium(!) being right next to the observatory. The other problem we're finding is that even when we get away from the cities and head out into open fields, there's still too much light pollution. There's been discussion about moving the telescope, but we'd have to move it almost completely out of the state to find a site that isn't washed out by light. :(

Here's a copy of an email I received from the American Astronomical Society just in case anyone else is interested in participating. My dot is already on the map for tonight.

SHED LIGHT ON LIGHT POLLUTION! JOIN THE GLOBE AT NIGHT CAMPAIGN, 16-28 MARCH!

More than one-fifth of the world population, two-thirds of the United
States population and one half of the European Union population are
unable to see the stars in our Milky Way galaxy arch across a
pristinely dark sky. With half the world's population now living in
cities, this problem is only getting worse. Yet you can easily be part
of a local solution to a global problem.

Shed light on light pollution! Take a few minutes to monitor your
local night sky brightness, place your measurement on-line noting your
location, date and time and within a few weeks see a map of light
pollution levels worldwide.

Be part of the "GLOBE at Night" citizen-science campaign and make a
world of difference! The GLOBE at Night campaign runs March 16-28,
2009. Help preserve our natural heritage for generations to come. Find
out more information at the GLOBE at Night web site
(www.globe.gov/GaN). GLOBE at Night is an official International Year
of Astronomy Dark Skies Awareness cornerstone project.

projects and the effects of light pollution, visit the links on

I think it's actually caused by the UotD's profile image. I've seen the same thing happen on other projects when the UotD has a wide image in their profile like that.

That's actually a quote from one of my physics professors (he was the source of many memorable physics quotes). Needless to say, it sparked a conversation about the forces exerted by various currencies when dropped off of tall buildings. :)

I'll swap weather with all of you guys. We just had some supercells run through the area followed by a squall line this evening. A city north of here got blasted by a pretty decent-sized tornado and there has been hail all over the place. I'm of the opinion that we shouldn't be having tornadoes in February, especially since we just had an ice storm a couple of weeks ago. I'm just now starting my computers back up after a series of brown outs caused by all of this mess. :(

Even Aqua has its own favicon now. We're down with the likes of orbit now in our lack of favicon-ness. :(

I've noticed that the time for my 64bit Vista has climbed up to an hour for .10 when tasks used to only take 45 minutes for .07, as well.

Boinc deletes the standard app whenever you add an optimized one to the folder.

It differs based on the OS. See above for one of the Vista pathways (there are multiple). Also Vista users beware that you have to enable hidden files to see the ProgramData file under your C drive, and that sometimes BOINC installs itself under the Users file instead.

You usually have to use 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC' for XP

or 'C:\ProgramData\BOINC' for Vista

It's not just you who's come across some longer than normal tasks. I used to notice some significant deviations in 'time to completion' on my 1.4 GHz laptop. Some slightly longer tasks have appeared for my 2.4GHz Q6600, as well, although the deviations aren't quite as significant. Neither of those two computers have any issues with overheating.
