1) Message boards : MilkyWay@home Science : A possible method for faster-than-light information. (Message 50713)

I just had a thought and I'm wondering if anyone could take a look at it and see if there are any problems with it. According to Einstein, information cannot travel faster than the speed of light. But imagine that there are two stationary planets 1 light year separated. Then imagine I build a rod between them so that it it touching each planet. Realistically, of course this is impossible, but isn't it theoretically possible that people on one end could move the rod back and forth, tapping the other planet and transmitting instantaneous information via Morse code?
2) Message boards : MilkyWay@home Science : What if, instead of an expanding universe there was a huge mass on the opposite side of the universe? (Message 50669)

If there was an enormous mass on the opposite side of the universe from us, wouldn't the view from our vantage point be exactly the same as in an expanding universe? Both would lead to everything appearing to accelerate away from us. I know this is far fetched, and I doubt that it's true but it's a neat thing to think about and I'm wondering if there are any problems with the idea.

Maybe you've set it to suspend all activity?

Gamma rays and x rays are both forms of light, and they all travel at the same speed of 186,000 miles per second.
5) Message boards : Number crunching : Boinc not communicating with the server? (Message 50613)

Hello,

I realize that this would be a question better posed to the Boinc help, but due to my only internet access having a ridiculous nanny filter I can't use Skype, which is how the help desk works. I recently got my computer wiped and reloaded with Windows seven and tried to reinstall Boinc and start number crunching again. However after I downloaded the Boinc Manager nothing happens, and I get an error that says either "cannot connect to the core client" or "the password provided is incorrect" (I didn't put in any password). Does anyone know any way I can solve this problem, or how to contact Boinc help without Skype? Thank you.
