1) Message boards : Number crunching : Work Unit Runtimes and 5970 (Message 40549)

Hi folks.

I am currently experiencing some strange WU runtimes variations.

I have 2 identical machines and on one the WU were taking about 1:30 each whereas the second machine was taking 3:30. Now I upgraded the second machine to Catalyst 10.6 from 10.3 and am seeing its times drop to 1:30 ish. So I upgraded my 1st machine from 10.5 to 10.6 and its times have risen to 3:30. So I'm puzzled as to why both machines seem to vary and damn why the hell can I not get 2 running at 1:30.

No BOINC settings were changed during the making of this weird scenario.

I find the OPTI app causes the starvation to occur and once I revert to the stock app it starts running fine again.

I now have a second machine go the same way on the OPTI and this also now has been reverted to stock and it has resumed crunching.

No changes to any config were made and all my machines share the same app_info.xml for the OPTI I install from a USB key.

All very weird as some machines have been running for 6+ months and have just stopped.

No harm done though as at least reverting to stock is so easy and it works.

I am also seeing an issue with one machine not being allocated tasks. Other machines are fine as was this till 2 days ago. Now it never get tasks always returns 0 tasks sent.

I have reset and failing that I detached and reinstalled opti app.

All looks okay and the stars file gets downloaded but it still will not send WUs.

I have 10 days set on the network prefs so I was expecting to get 24 units.

I have since copied the folder from a running installation and the same. NADA.

BOINC client is 6.10.24 and as I say till 48 hours ago was running perfectly.

Okay Sapphire sent me new BIOS files and I flashed both.

SUCCESS on MW but not Collatz so I'm staying here for sure :)

And the difference? Nada. Still can only use 3 gpus. Greeeat.

Post:
I have been fighting MW and Collatz with the 5970's and finally got Collatz working by creating a cc_config.xml and using <ignore_ati_gpu>0</ignore_ati_gpu>

Which means the GPU is skipped and units 1, 2 and 3 compute. After a day or two of Collatz crunching I decided to try my hand at switching back to MW.

BOINC only requested MW CPU units for download no GPU (but I can see 0 is recognised but disabled in the startup messages).

So on some insipation I changed the cc_config.xml to be <ignore_ati_gpu>3</ignore_ati_gpu> and then MW downloaded the WUs and started crunching. So it looks as if GPU0 is disabled then MW does not look and use 1, 2 and 3 whereas on Collatz it does making it more ID10T proof :)

Can I suggest a low priority change the next time a code build is happening is to still crunch 1,2 and 3 even if 0 is disabled.

I am beginning to think there is something very wrong with 195.62.

I keep loosing GPUs. 4 to 3 to 2 after a WU crash. Reboot and now I see only 3. So I tried booting a Vista partion with 185.xx drivers. 4 GPUs and I can blast Furmark with no issues nor GPU failures.

So on my part I am thinking of winding back a few driver versions and see if my WU pass and stop loosing GPUs after a crash. Its so bad it needs a power off rather than a reboot to free them back up.

Also my 260 is pretty much erroring 3 out of 4 units and thats up on 195.62 as well.

So whilst its not just that driver version as others are seeing the WU errors on other versions for me at least 195.62 is not a good place to be.

What setting do you have in the app_info.xml ?

I just put 2x 5970 in a machine and am only able to run with <coproc>1</coproc>
as when I set it to 0.5 it stalls and sloooooooooows right down. Is this the throttling you were mentioning in your post?

I'll try 0.5 with the bridge on and see if that frees mine up but I am still interesting in your app_info settings.

Thanks ! :)

EDIT:

So it seems I cannot run more than 1 MW task per GPU. This is down from 2 per GPU on the 4850x2 that were in there. So i have gone from 8 concurrent tasks to 4. Now each task should be alot faster so I guess I will have to see after 24 hours how its playing out but right now my hourly RAC is the same as it was with the 2x 4850x2 with 2x 5970.

Yes I am.

Only on 1 machine thoug but every unit dies. Reinstalled every driver from ATI from 8.6x driver to 9.4 through 9.11 catalyst to no avail.

Redownloaded the apps. Check the right version i.e. ATI or AMD.

For me its only the machine with ATI and nVidia in it and crappy cards but its driving me mad.

02:36 am and I am still here fighting it.

Oh and Collatz optimised app is fine grrr

If you take the best credits for initial expenditure i.e. purchase price your right.

If you factor the electricity bills into the equation I'm not so sure :)
4770's still may hold. Anything with a 48xx or 5xxx well thats a whole other story.

Don't tell me that I have two in the post.

In fact that has prompted me to go write down the questions about what would be the best 5970 app_info setup in the Optimized App thread. I was wondering what coproc value I need to utilize all those shaders. i.e. if it's 25% speed increase per unit and I can run double the units concurrently then thats aloooot more than 25% performance boost. Heres hoping :) Otherwise I will sell the 5970's and keep the 4850x2's running if 0.5 is still the best answer :)

A couple of things are you on XP or Windows 7?

Is your monitor plugged into the ATI or the nVidia (I presume the nVidia as you want to see the desktop on it).

Do you have a dummy vga plug in the ATI card or a monitor? i.e. is there something plugged into the card.

I am guessing your monitor is plugged into the nVidia but there is nothing plugged into the ATI. Therefore when you start BOINC up it sees the nVidia but not the ATI. If this is the case you can try extending the desktop uto the ATI and failing that you will need a dummy vga plug for it or another monitor plugged in.

When you start BOINC up does it report both cards in the messages tab? On my windows 7 box I see the appear nVidia 1st (which has the monitor attached) and on the very next line the ATI card shows (using a dummy vga).

Also you say the ATI is 1st and the nVidia is second have you checked the PCI-E slot numbers on the MB to make sure they really are that way round and it ws not not the case that the ATI was in slot 2 all along? (Depends on the MB if that would work but I have seen).

I also found I could install the full nVidia tools but had only to install the ATI drivers and not Catalyst as they clashed. Saying that I have now managed to get around that with the latest Catalyst running on there now with some nVidia drivers around 191.xx.

Hope that in some way helps :)

Okay time to hang my head in shame or to use a local saying 'I'm awa tae boil ma heid'.

I noticed that I also did not have a stock of units cached for other projects either. I checked my preferences and sure enough number of days to cache was 0. I set it to the max of 10 and suddenly downloading 47 Milkyway tasks.

So it seems if that setting is 0, and this was a new install on a new OS it defaults to 0, it doesn't even download enough units to keep the GPUs busy....

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry I forgot to put that yes all 4 GPUs are shown in BOINC in the status window with there RV type and CAL versions.

Aye Poorboy your not wrong and yes I have 1 monitor and 3 Dummy Plugs in. I can swap the monitor around and the plugs and I still get one running. If I remove a dummy plug the GPU disappears from CCC. When I put the plug back in it reappears. I was trying that last night. Kudos for the great reply though :)

Okay I'm stumped.

I have one machine with 2x 4850x2 in it and I can get only 1 or at most 2 units running on the optimized app at a time. And both run on Device 0.

I have checked the app_info and there is nothing weird in it. I have copied an app info over from another machine running 8 at a time (0.5 on the count x 4 GPU)

I have created a cc_config.xml and set the use all coproc flag.

I have gone from 6.10.18 to 6.10.19 in case it was an issue...

I have reset the project.
I have detached and re-attached the project.

I am now looking for a goat to sacrifice and a calender to show the correct phase of the moon to do it on.

Well wile it lasted. Reverted back to 6.10.0 which was good for 48 hours. Now I find a similar not requesting work probs. So now back to 6.5.0 I guess.

The drivers I used are:-

ATI_Catalyst_Windows7_8.612_no_CCC.exe

these have an AMD green logo on the .exe not a red ATI catalyst logo. Anything with an ATI logo, from th ATI site, I downloaded does not work.

I got them via alot of wandering on the AMD site and avoiding the ATI Catalyst site. The URL I used is http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/9-4/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx?&lang=English

Now go down until you see the 4th download button it should say 'Driver only for Windows 7' and the version is 8.612.1

These work for me.

My 4770 is working on Win7 with a GTX-260 present as well.

I am not installing Catalyst but rather the 8.12 drivers which work. Installing Catalyst just does not work for me.

Yes 6.10.1 does look nice but the scheduler is severly broken. I was too rash in installing it and now I have 5 idle machines. Time to detach again and time the falloff period.
