2) Message boards : Number crunching : Why so restrivtive small stock of tasks for me ??? (Message 57087)
Posted 30 Jan 2013 by astro-marwil
Post:
Hallo!
I allways get 80 task only for stock on my computer.
As I do crunch 129 +/- 17 tasks/day in the mean averaged over the last 16 days, that will last only for about 15 h of continously crunching, in case there is a breakdown of the data server or the internet connection. In my account I did set up to get at minimum a stock for 2.5 days and a max. of 3 days. That would result in a stock of 322 at minimum and 387 tasks at maximum. Why don´t I get them ???

Kind regards and happy crunching.

Hallo Mikey!
All threads dedicated for crunching on the GPU do use neccessarely also the CPU.
The CPU do handel the datatransfer from and to the data-server, has to set up the programm on the GPU and handels the data transfer to and from the GPU and, at the end do arange the results for tranfer back to the data-server. Especially the last one at the end of the task takes allways some seconds, which you easily can observe in the BOINC Manager/Tasks. But this neccessary CPU-time is in this project very low. It varies at me between 4 and 57[sec], with a mean of 10.64 +/- 5.71 [sec] for my GTX550Ti and 16.55 +/- 8.90[sec] for the slower GT440. The relative CPU-usage (CPU-time / Run-Time) is 1.12 +/- 0,58[%] for the GTX550Ti and 0.757 +/- 0.388[%] for the slower GT440. ( These data where derived from 1073 crunched tasks on the GTX550Ti and 472 crunched tasks on the GT440 within the last 12 days.) All GPU-threads are running at priority level ´Normal´, without disturbing my normal use. The higher CPU-time for the slower GPU card results, I assume, from the smaller bandwith of the memory path. The GTX550Ti has 192 lines , whereas the GT440 has 128 lines only.
I hope, this will answer some of your questions.

Kind regards and happy crunching

Hallo!
....consuming resources that could otherwise be used for science

That´s why such a easily available button for switching the screensaver on/off is so usefull. It just avoids this unneccesarary consuming of resources.
But this button should be on page BOINC-Manger/Tasks/MW@H.

Kind regards and happy crunching.

Hallo !
Are there any graphics that are currently usable at this time? or is this something being worked on?

I also find it uesefull to have this, even if it´s not running every time, as it consumes GPU-power. But it´s usefull to show the family and/or friends etc., whatfore we are spending attention, time and last but not least money. It´s a sort of advertising for this valuable project too.
If it is available, why isn´t it by simply reach of a button on the page of BOINC-Manager/Project/MilkyWay as in E@H? That would make it simple and comfortable.

Kind regards and happy crunching

Hallo!
These two graphs are realy informativ. They show the speed and direction in that the masses of the sagitarius stream are flying. They dont show how much masses, respectively energy, ist flying at each point. I don´t know whether the current data will let you draw this information from it. I think, it would a give a much different view on this and be of much interest.

Hallo Link!

Pending tasks are not failed, they are just waiting for a wingman to confirm your result.

That´s right, but they also require extra crunching power and so reduces the possible progress of the project. So a high rate of not validated tasks is still a drawback.

The extra crunching is used to ensure that only proper results get validated, ...

Well, I know about this. But now we have about a factor of 4 to 5 higher rate of extra validation runnings than before. And that binds crunching power. Only the software developpers can decide, whether this has to be accepted as unavoidable, or it can be made better by some programm code modification. Up to a month or so before it was better. And it would be better to come to the same situation as before. That is it.
And now I don´t like to talk about this any more. It´s not worth.

Kind regards and happy crunching

Hallo!
Since more than 3 days I haven´t had any crunching error, but still lots of not validated tasks. But I see under "pending tasks" / WU ID , that there are still a lot of failed tasks. The total numder of pending tasks listed is shrinking also, and the total crunching power is still increasing.

So, you´re at the right path! Hopefully !!!

Kind regards and happy crunching.

Hallo!
At me there are still about 3% ending up with failure, 16% can not become validated immediately.
May be, it became a bit better than before, but not sure.
On the other hand, the total crunching power of 349TFLPOs now begins to increase since jesterday, which is a good sign. It has droped by about 20% from 545TFLOPs before this bad task series. This drop is not only due to the higher rate of failure but also due to the very high rate of tasks to become verified very often by more than one wingman. This extra crunching binds al lot of crunching effort.

Kind regards and happy crunching

Hallo!
I think we must wait some days until all errorous workunits are complete invalid marked by multiple machines and not sent out then anymore?

No, there are lots of crunching errors from tasks that became send today. I don´t think, the rate of errors has dropped significiently. Specially the tasks of "de_separation_22_3s_free_xxxxxxx" are tending to fail. Furthermore, there have much more tasks to wait for validation. All erroronous tasks are ending up with errorcode 1 (0x1), incorrect function. This is not only limited to Win7/Vista, but some come also from Linux.

Kind regards and happy crunching.

13) Message boards : Number crunching : Lots of crunching errors since today (Message 55764)

Hallo!
Since today I get lots of crunching errors, all of: exit code 1 (0x1), unallowed function, at most for ps_separation_22_3s_free_1_xxx, but also some for ps_separation_22_3s_edge_1_xxxx. So I aborted all tasks of ps_separation_22_3s_free_1_xxx. Somewhat peculiar is, that some tasks of these types ended up fine. Normaly I don´t have any crunching errors. As all other is running well, I feel sure, the reason lies in this taks mentioned above, wich came up today.
Kind regards and happy crunching
Martin
