Ditto all of above with re-adding project have restarted, done ca-certificate update, tried adding with BAM and both URLs w/o BAM... always getting the try again message on this box. Will leave other boxes sitting as they were for now.

This occurs about every 24~36 hours. I use school for 1 box that has an RX 6800 card and I need it to NOT get GPU Sep WUs. Once "school" disappears I get a load of these WUs and they all error out. I notice and re-create the school preferences. 24hrs later it's gone from the website.

Knock on wood I'm not seeing that problem, I setup the different venues years and years ago and they are still there and doing what they should do. One thought do you have Work setup as well? If not maybe that will make School stick for you.

Well, guess it doesn't make any diff any longer... removed all but 'default'... but should GPU work come back I'll try adding 'work'.
Thanx, Skip

Keith already answered.

<app_config>

<app>
    <name>milkyway</name>
      <gpu_versions>
        <cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
        <gpu_usage>0.333</gpu_usage>
      </gpu_versions>
</app>

</app_config>

Worked for me until I went to RX 6xxx cards which can't run the GPU Sep WUs because the app still has a pre-OpenCL 2.0 (depreciated) command in it to get memory for a 'command que'.

Ditto, same problem. Replaced RX 580 in a box with an RX 6600 (going from opencl=legacy to rocm. Works on multiple E@H WUs and multiple PrimeGrid WUs but not MW Sep tasks. Haven't run it with any WCG WUs yet.

Thanx Ian&Steve C.:

Although sounds like easy app code fix to me.

If anybody cares... my 2x vs 3x on MW Sep 1.46 RX 580 results:

Ya'll got better RX580s than me. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with this. It is a $95 used Sapphire non-Nitro. Here's what some cutting, pasting and number manipulation is showing me for 2x vs 3x on this app. Sub 2 second advantage to 3x... I doubt I can get anything out of 4x (as it turned out on an E@H app also).

Hmmm, I don't seem to know how to paste 7 pages of .pdf here so just the bottom totals lines & notes from my .ods file.

The lower number of 2x tasks included was primarily because 2x was established. 2x numbers included echo prior days of running with that setup but going back further would've included running with a default core clock @ 1366Mhz for this card.

Current 3x running with 1393Mhz core clock but throttled to about 1380Mhz @ 153~154w package limit imposed by BIOS to keep it under the 155w limit. I suspect the 13Mhz throttling makes a very minimal difference, A twin box to this one will get a cheapo off brand RX580 with a low (1286MHz) default core clock tonight so we'll see.

						57	# of pending
						78	# of .333s
						36	# of .500s
						114	total

			Average all	209.32 no division applied
			Average 2x	83.99
			Average 3x	82.34		1.655	3x secs avg advantage*

Notes:
Core temp almost rock steady @ 70C with new fan profile.
Slight throttling of the 2% OC Core Freq on 155w package limit on this Sapphire card.
Dropping to 1300MHz (Level 6) drops package to ~123w and 69C.
Pending count as of 4/5/2023 local.
*The 3x advantage seems to be growing very slightly over time.

Skip,

Keith is right. You should be able to run atleast 5 units on your RX 580. I think I am running 8 or 10 on mine and I only have 8 cpu cores and you have 16. Just depends on how long you want to limit your run time to. I just kept on increasing the number of units I was running until it was not that advantageous to run anymore.

Good Luck,

Allen

Just changed app_config from .5 gpu to .333
Hope this goes well.

Thanx again, Skip

OK, running a bunch on the GPU right now and they seem to working two at a time even though I pretty sure these were in the que B4 I made the changes to the app_config. I did a "re-read config files" and they seemed to start running 2 at a time even though the line in boinc manager still says
"Ready to start (0.954 CPUs + 1 AMD/ATI GPU". Didn't realize it would change how they would execute on the fly w/o downloading new ones.

Anyway thanx to all. Will continue to tweek but right now I gotta go see if I can the proper driver/OpenCL from AMD installed for an OLD Oland card on a computer out in the garage.

Here's what I'm running with on this https://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/show_host_detail.php?hostid=979753 box right now:
<app_config>
<project_max_concurrent>10</project_max_concurrent>

<app>
  <name>milkyway_nbody</name>
  <max_concurrent>4</max_concurrent>
   <app_version>
    <app_name>milkyway_nbody</app_name>
    <plan_class>mt</plan_class>
    <avg_ncpus>2</avg_ncpus>
    <cmdline>--nthreads 2</cmdline>
   </app_version>
</app>

<app>
  <name>milkyway</name>
  <gpu_versions>
   <gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
   <cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
  </gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

Thanx all for the SUPER support.

As long as I'm begging...

Anybody want to share an app_config.xml for MW roughly appropriate for a 8 core CPU box with an AMD RX 580 card? I've next to no experience with these.

Again Thanx, Skip

This is the one I use:

<app_config>

<app>
<name>milkyway</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
<app_version>
<app_name>milkyway_nbody</app_name>
<max_concurrent>5</max_concurrent>
<plan_class>mt</plan_class>
<avg_ncpus>2</avg_ncpus>
<cmdline>--nthreads 2</cmdline>
</app_version>
</app_config>

I do delete the top section if I'm not running gpu tasks. The top gpu part tells your pc to run 2 gpu tasks at the same time while the bottom cpu part says to run 5 tasks at one time each using 2 cpu cores.

Thanx these are a big help!

Yes, the MW Separation app is rather poorly optimized. It won't use very much of the gpu at all at any time. It begs running at least 2X on the card to get the gpu utilization up closer to 90%. 2X for Nvidia cards is about max becase of how the Nvidia drivers have to virtualize their OpenCL component to run the Separation app.

AMD or ATI cards OTOH, typically can run at least 4X or maybe 5X depending on how much memory the card has. The app doesn't really use all that much memory. I don't have any running currently to tell you exactly how much the app uses. I remember its about 1.6GB I think but don't quote me.

Great! I'll give it a shot... now if I can find the app short name

On this new 'puter I have an AMD RX 580 card that I finally got working for BOINC stuff.

Let me ramble a bit to get to the real question...

In the last week I managed to finagle a app_config.xml file for E@H that allows one of the apps to run two concurrent threads on the GPU. Seems to be working OK although run times are all over the place. I don't have enough experience with this yet to know just how 'OK' this is.

<app>
<name>einsteinbinary_BRP7</name>
<user_friendly_name>Binary Radio Pulsar Search (MeerKAT)</user_friendly_name>

<gpu_versions>
<cpu_usage>1.0</cpu_usage>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

Because this box is running Linux Mint (v20.3, they broke BOINC install in v21.1) and the lack of B550 sensor detection in the kernel I'm ONLY able to do GPU temp & fan monitoring in the desktop (PMW fan setup for all else done in BIOS).

I noticed today that my Milkyway@home Separation 1.46 tasks are taking about 2:42 to complete. I'll assume this is OK for an RX 580 card out of the box. What I also noticed is when running this MW app my GPU temp is nearly 10C LOWER than that E@H app running (two threaded).

Finally... the question: Is this any indication that the Separation 1.46 tasks could be dual threaded on this single card? Anybody with any actual experience with this?

Thanx, Skip

Can somebody tell me what the 'short name' is for this app or where to find it? I'm after the name that goes into an app_config.xml file.

IIRC the solution is to run more than one task concurrently with app_config.xml file.

<app_config>
<app>
  <name>milkyway_nbody</name>
  <max_concurrent>3</max_concurrent>
</app>
<app_version>
  <app_name>milkyway_nbody</app_name>
  <plan_class>mt</plan_class>
  <avg_ncpus>4.0</avg_ncpus>
  <cmdline>--nthreads 4</cmdline>
</app_version>
</app_config>

This will run 3 n-Body tasks with each 4 threads on a 12 core CPU. If that isn't enough, you can try "--nthreads 5" without changing anything else, but you'll have to see, if that really improves the throughput. Don't do it, if the CPU also needs to feed a GPU.

Can I use the nthreads option to stop getting CPU WUs that require 15 threads? Hoping so as I copied your app_config into boinc-client/projects/milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway folder... so pending a download request to see.

Yeehaw... worked! Now I can tweak it.

Thanx much, Skip

Oh yea, a good workaround was found to this via xhost command in the /etc/init.d/boinc-client script. Not on that machine at the moment or I'd included it but if somebody still needs it reply here.

Is there a possibility to test a linux 32 or 64 bit gpu client app for this project ?
I have an Ati Radeon HD5870 which crunch on Dnetc.
I would prefer to crunch on Milkyway@Home if a linux gpu app has been provided with.

Thanx much... this explains what I'd thought to be an oddity between two 4850 equipped machines (one has ram clock that will not go below 993 in ccc, other has been running with VRAM clock at 650, both with GPU clock at ~650).

UPDATE: I guess I expected a couple seconds difference not a couple MINUTES!

On a AMD 9850, windozeXP machine w/ 2GB RAM with 4850 (1GB) I took the timings from it running last night at the lower vram clock (forgot I'd set it down from 650 to 475 yesterday). I then ran about 5 MW WUs and 5 Collatz WUs with the higher vram clock setting.

850 core/475 vram vs 850/950.

MW no measurable difference.

Collatz avg 19min 44secs vs 16min 52secs!!

Yet another update:

On a 5830 that was clocked 855 / 855 changing it to 855/1000 and running some Colatz WUs resulted in a decrease in average runtime of 38.5 seconds / WU. And again no change in MW WUs... well with all that proven well 'nuff for me... it's back to low vrams and MW workunits.
