21) Message boards : Number crunching : Run Multiple WU's on Your GPU (Message 72522)

Post:
No matter how many WU's I run my card won't use more than 210w when crunching, 2 / 4 / 8 units, its a 3090 and under WCG running 8 of their GPU units at the same time it will pull the full 350w,

With the price of graphic cards skyrocketing, I would avoid running any card at its max rating. High temps cause thermal paste to harden making removal non-trivial. Exact OEM fan replacement can be hard to find and one must be creative on occasions. I have a few really weird fan arrangements I can post if anyone interested.

BUT the problem comes down to MW not being able to supply you with enough tasks in one day to keep it going, with their 10 minutes back-off between sending tasks your 3090 will be doing something else for those 10 minutes even more often.

That BOINC app I modded, 7.15.0 fixes the 10 minute wait. The latest official version is 7l.16.11 and I assume the 10 minute problem still exists for that app.

Due to temperatures recently dropping here in texas, I started up a pair of garage "racks" to start crunching on Einstein and WCG. I have a 3rd rack for milkyway but the garage is still too hot to run that one.

YES your app did fix it, but unfortunately not everyone uses it.

I was using the modded 7.15 version that Joseph created but I changed to another version for the Primegrid challenge..... now I can't get it to change back to 7.15. Each time I try to install it as per the instructions, BOINC just won't connect.
I delete just about every BOINC file I can find but no luck. I'm not sure if perhaps it's due tot he project file not being deleted or if it's my cloud backup? Either way, I've tried it on 3 or 4 pc's but can't get it to work any more.

I really can't believe that the 10min backoff thing still exists. It's the single biggest issue with this project and because of it I crunch elsewhere like Einstein. I REALLY wish someone would take the time to address this issue :( It's only going to get worse as cards get faster.

Radeon VII 8x WU average 11 seconds each, sadly sits idle waiting for Wu's for too long....
R9 280x - HD 7970 average 42 seconds.

D.C.

Joseph Stateson has a work around for the idle time.
I was using it but every time I update BOINC, I have to go through Joseph's steps to apply the fix he has.

Your 3090 will crush tasks at primegrid....... although I've seen with GFN-16 tasks, its not much quicker than a 3060Ti! Same can't be said for other PG sub projects though where the 3090 will be king.

Um... if we are talking about crunching projects like Milkyway or Einstein, AMD cards crush NVIDIA for those work units.
You can also undervolt the cards if power is a concern. My Radeon VII's undervolted drop the wattage from well over 200W down to about 180W with barely any performance drop.

If you are crunching projects like Primegrid, its NVIDIA all the way.

@mikey - Interesting regarding your older cards. That's why I'm not an early adopter of new cards. I'll let someone else stump up the cash first :)

I see someone has a 6800. (Lucky buggers as they are rare as hens teeth!)

Unknown how many tasks are being run simultaneously.

I still think there's value in the old R9 280X.
You can pick one up for about AUD$100.00 possibly lower soon with new cards released. Great credit producer although a bit thirsty.

Thanks Mikey. I don't usually bother either but I was curious to see what credits I could push out with GPU & CPU crunching.
I gave up and went back to WCG for CPU crunching :)

I'm still interested to know why all my threads weren't engaged but for the time being I've given up on the CPU crunching. I can't stand having threads idle.
I could have run the N-Body tasks which are multithreaded but can I be bothered with the app config to divide my cores up? Not really. Not at the moment anyway.

So my 2 x 16 core processors (1950X & 3950X) are only crunching about 10, Milkyway@home Separation CPU wu/s at a time?
I can't see why I don't have around 30 threads/ pc crunching cpu work whilst also crunching GPU work. Strangely, all my other pc's are maxing out the thread count which is what I'd expect.

I am not talking about the n-body, mt work units in this question. This is specific to Milkyway@home Separation CPU wu/s

What am I missing guys & girls?

Edit - Yes, I know its not really worth crunching with the CPU, this was just a short test to see which is better, N-Body or Separation tasks on the CPU...but it's not much good if I can't max out my threads.

Just on the topic of the 2 different CPU options, does anyone know which produces the best throughput? mt tasks or the Home separation wu's?

If no one knows, I guess I'll have to do some testing.

Hi Keith,
I agree that they might not be great at Milkyway but I was curious anyway.
I'm interested to see what AMD bring to the table in October but I'm not expecting another Radeon VII type card.

I figured this would be a good starting point for anyone with a 3000 series NVIDIA card who wants to share their experience, or people considering these for Milkyway@Home.

I must admit, I was beginning to wonder why I continue to crunch M@H vs Einstein@Home.

Ah Ha!!
The answer to my issue was in this thread! (Needed a woman look as my wife would say)
It was the C++ redistribution package on one of my pc's. I too can confirm that the latest edition does not work. 2013 DOES.

Thank you Joseph!

G'day Mikey,

Yes I did look at GFN 15 or 16. Might as well go 16 as at least a prime number is large enough to be recordable vs GFN 15.
I'll give it a try some time.

So I've been away from Milkyway@Home for a while with summer around and may have missed something but it appears the issue of fast GPU's running out of WU's still exists?
Numerous times within a few hours I found my PC's with Radeon VII's not crunching tasks. It's a shame that a Radeon VII can't crunch a full 24hrs.

Any fix on the horizon?

This will only get worse when newer cards are released.

Yes it's annoying. And all it takes is a slight reconfiguration of the server. Why are no admins reading this?

Anyway, all I do is have another project (in my case Einstein) for the GPUs to work on inbetween. You can either give the projects equal priority so they do some of each, or give Einstein 0 priority, so it only grabs just enough to run in the 10 minute gap taken to get more MW tasks.

Hi Peter,

From memory I tried this last time and the issue was that the Einstein wu had to finish before it would start the Milkyway work. So I lost time while finishing the odd E@H and the new MW@H wu was queued.

Thx for the suggestion though.

Edit - Or I might have used PrimeGrid as the fill in. I can't recall.
