Ever since the Test Wu's started running some day's ago my i7 refuses to keep running the Wu's on the lone 4870 ATI Card that's in it, I had to RMA 1 Card so it's just a Single Core Box right now.

Anyway I have to keep stopping & restarting the BOINC Client every few Hr's or the ATI Milkyway Wu's just sit there doing nothing. It shows all 48 Wu's on the Box as running but none really are & none are progressing either.

So I Stop & Restart BOINC and 3 more Wu's will start up & Progress for awhile, then it drops to 2 then 1 then none running again after a few hours & won't start anymore unless I stop & restart BOINC Again.

All my other Box's keep running the Wu's without any input on my part so I can't figure out what would have changed that the i7 that they won't keep running them too. I've tried all different kinds of settings but the only ones that will work on any of my Box's are as follows:

<avg_ncpus>0.0001</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>1</max_ncpus>
<cmdline>n3</cmdline>

The <avg_ncpus>0.0001</avg_ncpus> Setting is the only way I can even get them to run at all on any of my Box's, if I change that setting to a lesser # such as 0.001 the Wu's just go into a Waiting to run State and never actually start up.

I go through that all day long with my i7, the rest of my Box's run fine with no input but the i7 is a real pain. I'm thinking of shutting off AQUA before I go to bed tonight but I don't even think that will work, I think it will just be sitting there idle when I get up in the morn ...

I had a measly AMD 3800+ 939 chip with a 3850 AGP card keep doing this also. I had BOINC 6.6.36 installed, but went back to 6.6.28 and everything has worked just fine since. I can't explain it, but it worked for me.

I've been running 6.6.20 on all my Box's, that seems to work ok for the NVIDIA equipped Box's but the ATI Card Equipped Box have had their troubles since going to the 6.6.20 Client. I just switched the i7 back to the 6.5.0 Client which I ran for a long time with no problems, Figured it couldn't run any worse than the 6.6.20 Client. Will see how that does over night with the i7 ...

Poorboy, I'm running 6.4.7 with my I7 and have no problems. I run AQUA cpu and MW GPU full time. I limit the cores to 7 which keeps AQUA from taking over and slowing down the GPU card. It drops the cpu down to 82% load but that is less loss of credits than the 7% hit I take on the GPU if I enable all 8 cores.

Also, I'm running CAT 8.12 for the card.

I was going to suggest down grounding BOINC to below 6.6.x if you don't need the CUDA aspect of it or else upgrade to the latest 6.6.38 - not my preference but my cpu only machine at work appears to be doing OK with it, even though it constantly asks for GPU.

I think the BOINC Client I use on it or any Box is just a Crap Shoot really, it may or may not work and it may or may not continue to work depending on the Project I'm running with the Milkyway Project. The i7 was running just fine before the Test Wu's stated coming, since then it runs like Krap.

Tried the 6.5.0 again before going to bed last night & that lasted all of 15 minutes before Milkyway shut down and the Wu's just sat there in a Waiting to run State again. So I installed 6.6.28 & let that run over night. When I woke up this morning only 1 Milkyway Wu was running so that's not working either.

I've used 6.4.7 before and though I can't remember now why I dumped it for some reason, but I'll try it again since none of the other Clients seem to be working on that particular Box right now. I'll also give 6.6.38 a try when I get around to it.

Well the 6.4.7 & 6.6.38 both were flops, neither one would keep the Milkyway Wu's running. So for now I'm just going to use the 9 CPU Trick, that seems to keep them running, but you have to Suspend the Second AQUA Wu or it'll run too and then the Milkyway Wu's still won't run.

You just have to remember to keep an eye out for the running AQUA Wu to finish and start the next one up. Kinda a lame way of doing it but it seems to work ...

Have you reviewed this post. And yes I also can only leave one AQUA wu running along with only 1 wu from a 3rd project running and ensure MW has just over 50% or the resource share. Micro-managing BOINC in the extreme!

I went to 9 CPU's on my i7 & 5 on the Quads earlier this morning after seeing a couple of the Quads stop running Mulkyway too. I suspended 1 of the AQUA's too and so far the Milkyways have keep running.

The only drawback that I've seen so far is after 1 AQUA finished and you start the other one you have to shut BOINC Down & restart it again or the Milkyway Wu's will quit running again until you do that. I don't know if anybody else has to do that but that's what I have to do anyway.

If it isn't one thing then it's 1/2 dozen things of the other so you never win it seems ...

Poorboy, as I said I have no problem running my I7 as long as I limit CPUs to 7. I'm running 6.4.7 and CAT 8.12. I have the cache etc set to 2 day connect to internet and 5.00 day cache. Set the "Switch between applications" to 5.00 minutes.

If I don't change DFC in the client file then it goes to 100 on AQUA and it will only load 1 AQUA unit into the machine at a time. If I drop that below 80 it will download the 2nd unit. So I've typically got 1 AQUA unit at a time and then the MW cache varies between 5 and 48. I added a config file to force immediate upload of completed units. Otherwise AQUA will sometimes upload the finished unit but BOINC waits up to several hours to complete the "report" and download a new unit. With the config file it does the upload, immediately reports, and download the next wu.

My system has been running for days without a hiccup other than my danged DSL has dropped out 4 times in the past 5 days following a lightning strike.

One other thing of note, if you drop you CPU from 8 to 7 even though the benchmark in "messages" says you are using 7 processors in reality the AQUA unit will not release the 8th one till it is finished. The NEXT wu will only use 7 processors.

I'll give that a try Bryan & let you know how it works out, almost have to now that it looks like the AQUA Project has released some 8_2m Wu's. Those will be lucky to last an hour on my i7 running @ 3.6Ghz, not as fast as some people run um but for Air it's stable and fast enough for me anyway.

Well after a day of trying 7 CPU's on my i7 it's been pretty much a bust, I still have to keep fiddling, tinkering, adjusting the settings to try to keep Milkyway running & in the end nothing really works for more than a load or 2 of Milkyway Wu's.

Right now I've just about given up even trying to run any work the CPU's, about all I can do is just drop back to spoon feeding the CPU's again a little work once in awhile when I notice they've finished what their doing. Other than that they can just sit Idle.

The same thing applies to my Quads too, running 3 or 4 CPU's is a waste of time trying to keep Milkyway running so I just spoon feed them too when I have a little time to check on them.
