You have got to understand here in MW land, the admins here have gotten to a 'this is really tedious' point in this project's life. We no longer get response and participation from the admins, and only periodically (and rarely) do we get anything regarding updates and explanations.

Admin/project folks here simply have (emotionally and intellectually) moved on and are largely going through the motions at this point.

I'd hope they find a way to get re-energized about this project, but increasingly the sympathetic frustration I have with this project is moving through the stages of disappointment and moving toward ire.

I'm certainly having trouble replying to you, this is my third attempt and I'm moving to ire myself now. If you get to speak to these admin/project guys can you ask them to kick the server...

I don't know the folks at RPI -- just a function of participating over here for over a year and watching the changes.

As one of the only two ATI GPU projects, there is a fair amount of 'need' for this project to run better. Folks simply can't move on to secondary projects the way they can with CPU based power. What makes it worse, the other ATI GPU project -- which is the ONLY one supporting lower end ATI GPU's -- has its own problems. For Collatz though, it isn't a case of 'ennui' as it so clearly is here, rather it is truly a lack of resources that is the issue there -- (bandwidth, hardware, and admin).

Today, that project is essentially offline -- very much like here -- very slow to unresponsive server.

That is the problem here: 1 server (or portion thereof), a few staff (students), reduced bandwidth(was larger until gpus cased problems). There was a month here and there where travis and bunch did respond a lot and got a lot done, other than that it really drifted off some time after I joined and sort of stayed there.

I know I have been around since near beginning. I sort-of can't believe it hasn't been shut down yet. It was more of a see-what-I-can-do in the beginning and used Milky Way to get things going with "computer science". I was on Nano-hive and it did a few models and quit, the high ups didn't care as it was a pet project for them.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

Having joined quite a few projects when they just came out of the gate I have seen a pattern where there is intense interest and lost of interaction with the admins until about 6 months in ...

Then, it stops ...

I am not so convinced that it is lack of interest so much, I suspect that the project gets into a "steady-state" where work is being done at a sufficient rate that there is little pressure on the admins to pay attention to the day to day problems.

When you look at the basic user profile this becomes somewhat clear ... of 1,826,644 who have signed on to BOINC only about 300K and change are active... that is the hard core fanatics that crunch in the face of all the obstacles placed in the path ... some do leave, but, new meat joins and the voting with the feet is somewhat futile as the admins won't see significant changes in production ...

The less skilled/dedicated are frustrated with the issues and simply walk away ...

There is no rational reason for MW to spend much time in that production rates are so high that the server is the main bottleneck, not the presence of one or another user ...

I think you are about right with that assessment. It's possible that Travis and Dave have moved on, or providing just fleeting direction to some poor souls trying to keep this going. Hopefully someone at the server end will notice our posts and realize that there has to be some due care and consideration to all those making an effort at this end.

Dave Przybylo is no longer involved with Milkyway.

Travis is the primary person with a couple people working with him.

I've increased the workunit size (again), which should help the server load.

Thanks Travis, you could also consider chaning the backoff time from 1 min. to 3 min. or so.

Sweet. I wish I had thought to check if it was you prior to laying with settings and rebooting all my crunchers. lol.

/Races off to check new credit levels ;-)

Device 1: ATI Radeon HD5800 series (Cypress) 1024 MB local RAM (remote 2047 MB cached + 2047 MB uncached)
GPU core clock: 725 MHz, memory clock: 300 MHz
1600 shader units organized in 20 SIMDs with 16 VLIW units (5-issue), wavefront size 64 threads
supporting double precision

WU completed.
CPU time: 3.99363 seconds, GPU time: 106.76 seconds, wall clock time: 110.689 seconds, CPU frequency: 2.94246
Granted credit 213.759239

Great, not shabby at all, at all.

As per my promise, I will make a further $300 donation today to reflect the increased WU size.

Thanks Dr. Travis

Puh, first I thought my ATI card was having problems all of a sudden but then I realized happily that just the WU size/run time was increased! Fine! :-)
Lovely greetings, Cori
