I try simply to put 2 cards in the same system,I extended the desktop on the second card,I terminated the second card as I do with the CUDA devices and got...errors only.
How to place more than 1 ATI card on the same system?
Any hint?
Thank you

It might be an idea to PM The Gas Giant about this point.

He runs a quad 9550 with 2 ATI cards present - an HD4850 and an HD4870. He has run this dual GPU set up for many weeks now, and things seem to be stable.

Although he is renning the older ATI cards, his experience should help.

You can also PM other users who have successfully run the HD4890 to see their experience and problems. I seemed to remember a thread, here, which indicated problems getting a 4890 running in the early days of the cards first release.
Go away, I was asleep

I have a 4850 and a 3850 sitting in the same machine. Vista 64 sp1 8.12 catalyst drivers. I made a dummy vga plug which keeps the desktop extended past reboot. What drivers version are you using and what is your OS?

I have two Visiontek 4850s in my i7 using WinXP Pro (32 bit) & the 8.12 drivers, no problems with the setup.

As someone said earlier, the 4890s can be problematic. The first thing is to get just one card working in the machine. Once you've done that, just drop in the second card and it should get recognized.

Oh, and make sure that they are not CrossfireX'd.

Done!!
Thank you very much for the hints!
The errors were dued to the fact the three amd*.dll files magically disappeared when I put the second card inside!!

I am having trouble getting both of my 4850's working.
I do not have them in crossfire, they are spaced too far to use the connector.
Both are recognized by the system though. What can I do to get them both working?

Damn that is exactly what I did how did you know?

Just after enough restarts and throwing various Boinc clients and ATI drivers, it started working.
I am just happy to be having 6 work units at a time going.

The twin monitor setup is just a nifty plus...

It's the cardboard cut-out situation. Talk to a cardboard cut out of a person who doesn't reply (or replies in gibberish) and before you know it you've got it sorted ;)
