On 9/12/2009 from noon until 2pm EDT that ATI application will be available on BOINC in order to assist the BOINC developers with any issues relating to the new 6.10 client that will have ATI support.

Thank you for your cooperation during this time period.

I'll switch a machine over to test.

If I remember, that is. ;)

(maybe you should sticky this thread for a few days)

afaik, only 6.10.4 or later BOINC client will work with the ATI app (earlier version didn't correctly pass along the correct info to get ATI work). You will also need to remove the app_info file for proper testing, as BOINC itself will detect your ATI card and download the ATI app correctly now.

I would recommend you finish out your work, shut down BOINC and back up the BOINC folders by copying them elsewhere, then upgrade to 6.10.4. Next remove or rename the app_info file and remove or move any of the other files in the milky way directory. Now you can start BOINC back up on the new build. This way you don't risk ruining any of the current work that might confuse the developers into thinking its a problem with the new client, and also this way you will start off with a clean MW directory.

If this info was directed at me, that is my plan.

I'll probably just detach MW after backing up everything. That might even give it a new HostID for the testing.

It was meant for anyone who was going to test the ATI app under the new way of doing things.

Also, I forgot to mention that theres an issue with the "on frac" time where it doesn't think your computer has ran since February. After the benchmarks are done, you will need to shut down BOINC and head to the data directory. In there, edit the client_state.xml file. Find the lines with:

<time_stats>
<on_frac>0.099771</on_frac>

and change the value to 1.000000, then save and start BOINC again.

and no, youll keep the host ID even after a reattach (unless your going from 5.x.x to 6.10).

I just found out I won't be able to participate in the test. A family get-together that I thought would be later in the day now starts at the same time as the test. :(

I have install 6,10.4, removed the contents of C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway and restarted Boinc. I am now running work units for Milkyway@Home on a CPU, it has been while since I have done that.

Here is a list of the projects that I'm running. Do I continue to run all my project or just Milkway during the test and is there anything else I need to do.

  • MilkyWay@home

  • Docking@Home

  • climateprediction.net

  • Rosetta@home

  • The Lattice Project

  • World Community Grid

  • LHC@home

Set it up now and let it run thats what I'm doing I don't plan on sitting here for 2 hours, but I will be checking on it. I will be running on the CPU except during the test and you can change it back to the GPU app when you get home.

Because I have to leave before the test starts and I'm not letting a pre-alpha test run completely unattended.

Been there, done that (too many times)

I thought MW was and alpha test all along, and we've been taking the risk with ATI these past months to run it unattended at times. Even I have to go to the loo sometimes :p But then the rewards have been high and I'm hitting a BOINC total of 50 million any time now ;)

If I find the time I'll have a go with this this 'temporary availablity' and not miss out on the fun :)

I'm happy with the current Betatest of Gipsel's MW 0.20 that works - why should I touch a running system (remember the problems this project got) ?!?

BOINC DOES NOT detect my ATI card.

I am running 6.10.4__ my card is a XFX brand Radeon HD 4850.

I also tried 6.10.0 and 6.10.1 and, none of them detect my card.

Am I the only one with this problem ?

at this point, only those comfortable with using test settings should run the new client with the new server configuration. both the BOINC developers and the MW admins are doing this testing to find out if the entire system is working as expected, for if it doesn't, changes will need to be made before the 6.10.x can be released as stable.

If you do not want to participate in the testing, or cant, dont. There will be plenty of time later on to change if you feel like it.

The main advantages are when this is all working as expected, you will no longer need to use the app_info to get work for your ATI card, and you can get better apps for your card as BOINC will tell the server what card you have and if possible, the server will send you a better optimized app.

I see you have windows XP 32bit, but for more info:
a) what card do you have
b) what driver are you using?

information like this is what the BOINC devs are after.

A. my card is a XFX brand Radeon HD 4850

B. I am using catalyst 8.12

It works fine with the anonymous platform.

I had a hard time installing the catalyst 8.12 driver a couple of months ago. The install program ‘at first’
told me I did not have a usable card installed for those drivers. After a couple attempts it finally went ahead
and installed the 8.12 driver and …. works fine ever since.

So… I my have some sort of weird glitch in my system which is preventing BOINC 6.10.4 from identifying my card.

Thanks [SETI.USA]Tank_M for responding.

according to ATI's (err AMD's) site, the 8.12 does support the 48xx for xp 32bit, so it doesn't seem to be an issue there, but I do not know if updating them will cause a problem with the new ATI app or not.

hopefully someone can provide an answer :)

9/11/2009 9:49:08 PM ATI GPU 0: RV770 (CAL version 1.4.283, 1024MB, 1064GFLOPS)

My card is a PowerColor HD 4850
I'm using the Driver Version 8.612.0.0 from Catalyst 9.5 with the 3 files renamed.
I haved tried Catalyst 9.6 & 9.8 and went back to 9.5 both times.
I now see Catalyst 9.9 is available, for this test I'm planning on using
my current driver but would change it if it would be of any benefit to the test.

My question is do the 3 files need to be renamed for the test app.
Also should I run my other projects during the test.

They need to be copied, renamed and put back so there are 6 files.

I did that, but what I wanted to know is should I leave them there for the test. I have removed the GPU app for the test but not those files.

It is live now, I personally don't have any way to verify if it will work so please report any issues and include the BOINC version, Catalyst Version, Operating System, and what video card.

Edit: It will appear as version 19 and is only available for 32 bit Windows and uses version 0.19g SSE2 from Cluster Physik
