Just got an HD5870 as well. It takes on average 21s to complete a WU using the optimized 0.20 Win x64 client app. I am running 900Mhz Core @ 1,075V VGPU (stock on these cards is usually 1,16V). A small overclock in combination with undervolting the card makes for an even more efficient cruncher, also the stock cooler won't go past ~40% or so, being easier on the ears.

To adjust the VGPU on your 5850/5870 card, simply use MSI Afterburner - a very neat tool for changing clockrates and voltage that should work on any reference design HD5800 series card (as of now, all cards are still reference design).

Nice, looks like you have it with a 12 core CPU:
Genuine Intel(R) CPU 000 @ 2.40GHz [Intel64 Family 6 Model 44 Stepping 0]
What pray tell is that? NDA, who needs an NDA...
Lets see, 72 WU cache, 24 minutes :-)

Nope, more than 8 cores don't count.

How did you do that benchmark. I have the 5850, and I would like to post the data for it to show the comparable results.

SinisterMinister your figures of the same kind that were posted by Hans-Ulrich Hugi can be found by:

If you are logged in click on "My account" at the bottom of any page here. Then click on "Tasks View" in the "Computing and Credit Section". Then click on "Valid" at the top of the page, then click on any task number in the "Task ID" column on the left. There you will find those details.

I had a quick look and that is excellent performance. How is your HD 5850 for heat and noise at that speedy pace?

Noone of the MW staff will do it. After all they have not that much done on the ATI app so far ;).

To be honest i see nothing done to the server at all
So i wonder if MW is gonna last anyway, i get the feeling the people in charge here at MW don't care at all about us.

Ah ok, I see where to get that info now. Heat wise, it sits around 80 at full load, but the fan never kicks up past 35%, if I punch the fan up to full, the temps come down real quick and drop below 60, so it seems pretty good on the thermal front =D. It's funny, because the stock fan on my cpu is so loud that I never hear the card spin up... that is unless I turn the fan up, and then it sounds more like one of my Sun servers...[/quote]

Thanks for the report, I am interested in purchasing one when the stock level improves. I don't wish to wear earplugs to sleep as suggested by some helpful souls. :) My current card came with an Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo Pro and it is reasonably quiet.

The HD 57xx cards are reported NOT to support double precision. Has anyone had a chance to try one on MW? There's a HD 5770 running over at Collatz but that only needs single precision....

The driver reports it as not having double precision, too. So it doesn't look good for MW crunchers.

Btw., Collatz doesn't need single precision either, it is pure integer math ;)

I noticed that the 57xx cards are only 128 bit also. They're good budget cards for gamers, but I'm not sure they'd be much for GPU crunching. Tho my 5870 is scheduled for delivery tomorrow, I'm looking forward to it. :D

Is anyone successful in grunching with 5870 under Win XP64? I got my running w/o a problem, but whenever I start a MW ati app, the card freezes.

The 5870's run okay under Win XP64 over at Collatz, I'm running 2 of them there. But the Milkyway's won't run for me either on my 5870's, I'm running the 0.20 exe & don't really know if that's the one to be running as I haven't been paying much attention to this project lately. Maybe an upgrade on the exe would help ??? My Cards didn't Freeze but all the Wu's just erred out immediatly ...

The 4770 is 126bit also and is about 40% of the speed of a 5870 and 50% of a 5850. About what it should be, 128bit doesn't seem to make a difference. On the other hand it seems the 57xx is actually a big downgrade from the 4770 in that they don't support double precision and thus won't work on MW.

My 5870 is here and crunching now. :D I did have to change cases as that thing is a bloody beast of a card. Turns out WUs in 17-23 seconds for the most part. It was nice not having to rename the .dll files or anything. :)

Those prices are already much lower than when I bought mine at the beginning of the year. But then there is the small matter of paying for a new PC to put another 4870 in, and as Tombei the Mist says, the price of electricity will not be starting to plummet anytime soon...

I'm aiming to squeeze the most out of what I have, and still hope to make it into the BOINC top 100 without going for any further GPU cards.

But then again... they are starting to plummet in price anytime soon... ;P
