Get your votes in early ...

I just installed an ATI HD4870 to match my existing HD4870 though the memory sizes are different ... I posted a note regarding the way BOINC reports this. And Rom replied thusly:

Asymmetric GPUs from the same vendor is currently not supported.

The reason both or your GPUs are showing up instead of just the most
capable is because you have the <use_all_gpus/> flag specified in your
cc_config.xml file.

At this time we do not know if/when we'll support the Asymmetric GPU
from the same vendor scenario.

I suggested that this is a bad idea:

You are going to have to eventually for the simple reason that people, particularly for the wider rigs are not going to be able to upgrade 3-4 GPUs necessarily at the same time...

Even worse, models are dropped and in essence you are going to be telling people that when they want to upgrade and fill a slot and the old model is no longer available that they have to junk a perfectly good card? Not a good move ...

Understand clearly what this means, if you have a 3 GPU system their expectation is that all three will be same make, model, and internals... In that GPU cards in the same model line don't always stay the same from one year to the next this is an impossible standard to meet ... unless you have way more money than I and can afford to buy your GPU sets all on the same day ...

I pointed out that this asymmetry was inevitable last year, that GPU installations are more than likely going to be asymmetric than not for many people ... but UCB in cloud land is going to expect that if you want to run GTX295 cards or HD5870s you are going to buy them in batch lots ... I don't know about you ... but I don't always have $1,500-$2,000 to spend all in one swell foop ...

Of course, you can just let the least capable, that is all those GPUs that don't match the top one, sit idle ... won't that be fun ...

Anyway, please make your objections known on the Alpha list or you are going to be stuck ... forewarned ...

I'm boring - 1 GPU per box. Its just that I have 6 GPU boxes atm.
Cheers,

I have a 4850 and a 4870 in the same box and will be staying that way for a while unless I win the lottery....

But I will never purchase cards in batch lots so I will always have an asymmetric installation as I upgrade one card etc.....

Then best complain so I am not the only voice ... because UCB is going to take silence as consent ... and will never consider reality because I don't know of anyone that can always afford to upgrade in full sets.

Even if they can, like on my next upgrade cycle I have two GTX260s and if they are both running and I get a MB with three PCI-e slots ... will I be able to find GTX260s? By then the fuller line of GTX300 cards may be filling the niches and I am supposed to junk two perfectly good GPUs?

Anyway, silence is consent ...

Add my vote, I usually sell a card and upgrade, and if I can't sell I'll upgrade anyway and keep the second card to work with the new asymmetrically.

You need to do it ...

Rom may see your input if you add to my thread in Collatz as he has been over there ... but if it is not on the alpha list it is not written down and doesn't exist ...

Best person to talk to about this is kevint / campaignforliberty, etc... DA and crew probably won't listen to him either, but he probably has one of the largest installs...and may know a lot of others who would have their thoughts on the matter...

Also, I see server performance here is in the tank again this morning...
