Hello guys!

i decided to give milkyway a try because i have heared it supports ati gpu crunching.

so first of my rig is an athlon64 x2 6000+ in combination with an asus hd 4850.

the os is win7 enterprise 32bit and
boinc client version 6.0.11.

what would be the best setup combination for the best gains on milkyway?

for example both cpu cores and the gpu core crunching togheter for the project? or only gpu crunching and cpu sitting idle?

are there any optimized apps out there wich can be used for speeding up things?

every little bit of info is apreciated bigtime. thx

Your Gpu would be the best to go with. Mw you can only use an opti app for either cpu or gpu. Go with gpu for most bang. Fine tuning can be found in a few different topics or someone else can help there.

Use an opti app for your gpu.

Yep -> http://www.brilliantsite.com or others sites listed have opti apps.

Yep.

Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

Yes you can. You just can't use opti apps for both on the same machine at the same time. If you want to run your gpu for another project soley than you can use the cpu app for Mw, If you run the gpu here you would benefit more from the gpu opti app. Your choice of course.

Yep!! GPU is way faster better to use that, as Bandit said. He's given the link for the opti apps for gpu and the cpu apps are also there.

If you use the gpu make sure that you read and understand the README file that is included in the zip file...Good luck!!

Which opti app did you install. ATI or AMD?

Theres your problem there... Athlon is AMD is it not?? So maybe try the AMD app.

Use cpuz to find out what your processor is capable of.. Ge it here http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

fixed it. was some strange driver problem. uninstalled all ati stuff cleaned registry and fresh installed catalyst 9.9. now working ok.

only thing i will need to fix si running more then 1 wu on the gpu.
somehow the <cmdline>nx</cmdline> line in app_info does not work.

got it working doing 2 wu at once now.

just a little question:

is it normal that running both wu on my 4850 i get a return time of around 1m55sec? should it not be lower?

and if yes what else do i need to tweak?

n parameter "Do not use it with an ATI aware BOINC client! It should be ignored in that case." from the readme file

"Changing the count value to 0.5 will run two WUs per GPU, a value of 0.33 three WUs." from the readme file

So with an ATI aware BOINC version 6.10.x, to configure the number of concurrently run tasks use the <coproc></coproc> section:
<count>1</count> runs one task (default)
<count>0.5</count> runs 2 tasks concurrently
<count>0.33</count> runs 3 tasks concurrently

The 8.12 driver you had earlier is considered by many to be the most stable and give the least problems. You used an application variant that is designed for later drivers, that is why it didn't work when you had 8.12 installed. After you cleaned the registry and succesfully changed to Catalyst 9.9 it worked.

"Catalyst 8.12 and 9.1 use the application variants with "_amd.exe" at the end" from the readme file

"Usage:

- Read this file carefully!
- If problems arise, read it again ;)" from the readme file

Normal. You are doing 1 unit every 57.5 seconds (two units 1m 55s)
