Dude, that's awesome. I checked your computer and it seems a 5870. Would you tell me the core clock and voltage please?

of course =). core at 1.274 V, 1105 Mhz (i.e. 850+30%), memory downclocked to 900Mhz. PC stands at loggia (not sure exactly for this word). fan run at 75%, GPU temperature is 38C under full load. where is because -25C outside.

i think 1105 is not a limit. but let it be tested at this clock at first =)

btw. i use MSI afterburner for overclock this.

How did you take it to 1105? It doesn't let me pass even 1000 while using MSI, due to CCC?

just latest msi afterburner and ati drivers downloaded 3 weeks ago. ccc not used.

but i have read yesterday what it is possible to edit MSIAfterburner.cfg file.
"EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 0" should be "1".

i think this will helps.

of course, use ovetclocking and overvoltaging at you own risk. i have very good natural cooling (-20C) for it.
let us know about your results ;)

Crab, thanks for these posts. I have a couple of oil cooling blocks on order for my 5970's. When they arrive I will OC the core to 1000. Its ~25 degrees here so I don't want to go far on the aircooled version.

Thanks.

AFAIK, water has better thermal capacity when oil. anyway, i think 1000 MHz should be easily to achieve.

Thanks for the info.

I achieved stability at 1000 mhz 1.225 core clock (again winter, not as cold as -20 tough:). My water cooling kit will be completed on Tuesday if everything goes well. I'll post the results.

For those running on stock cooling, and do not want to overclock, I would advise using MSI Afterburner to undervolt their cards to minimum voltage (1,0V). All cards should be able to handle that at stock speeds, and it will save you approx. 50W as well as cause the stock cooler to not ramp up all the time (better on the ears) :)

I encountered a problem.

While overclocking to 1100 mhz on 1.274 volts as Crab stated, the blue screen appeared. After rebooting, i observed that the gpu usage fluctuates between 75 and 95 percent continuously. Previously, it doesn't fluctuate in the extensive interval, it was about 95 to 99.

What I'm asking is now that, did i cause an irreversible damage on hardware side? (Although software sides are kernel or DLL.)

NOTE: I re-installed the Catalyst 9.12 Hotfix and gpu usage is back to normal; but i still have my doubts)

Probably not. What has happened is that the core temp has got too hot and the card is trying to cool it self down. It does this by turning itself on and off.

I have the same problem where one of my cores is running about half the time at about 25%. Reduce the OC'ing or cool the card more and the problem will go away. I will be converting the problem card to water cooling today.

Thanks David.
The temperature was below 80 degree. I thought it was due to excess voltage on core.
Now the fluctuations are gone; but despite the w factor is 0.0, the wu begins after 4 seconds pass where it was previously beginning right the count starts. It wasn't this way and I really fear something happened to the core:(

I thought it was due to excess voltage on core.

blue screen was because it was insufficient voltare for GPU for a given frequency. GPUs a differ from chip to chip, so if one is OK for certain freq/volt, but another is not OK and need even more higher voltage. and don't forget, i run mine in a very cold air, so it's temperature did not exceed 36-38C under full load.

btw, i have many window's crushes before i find necessary voltage for a stable work at 1100 mhz. i think you should not worry about hardware damage, it is very unlikely in your case.

btw, 1100 mhz @ 1.275 V, however, is not stable enough, so i reduce it to 1064 MHZ @ 1.25 V.

Possibly, I have never over voltaged the core, mainly because I don't want to invalidate the warranty. Note the cruncher that did the extreme OC'ing had temps of -20 outside. And, he did it with the window open to provide cooling for the card. Heat is not your friend.

Mine hit 102 degrees then the card started protecting itself to bring temps down to an average of 97 degrees.

I decided to stay at 1000. I installed the second 5970 on Friday and when something gets wrong, my fear gets double:).

Thank you guys for the confrontation tough.

Does anyone experience issues in crossfire mode when CPU is overclocked, running Milkywawy? It doesn't happen if CF disabled, VGA is oc and cpu oc nor CF enabled, VGAs are oc, cpu at stock. I only witness when both crossfire is enabled and cpu is oc.

CPU: Q9550, MOBO: X48T-DQ6 (F5), VGA: 2x5970 Sapphire (latest bios), PSU: 1500 WATT TOUHGPOWER W0171.
