I'm thinking about adding a 4770 to my gtx 260; is this going to work?

I see that another user has claimed to have gotten such a setup to work but there's no nvidia GPU listed as in use under his account. Running windows 7 x86 I'm assuming I'd need to upgrade to x64 for BOINC to take advantage of all of that memory(I already have over 4gb system memory between gtx 260 and ram)...?

What little I've read on the matter says that this is not possible on Vista. Anyone know if the same's true for 7?

Jeremy, I'm actually trying this with a GTX 260 and a HD4850. The HD4850 should be arriving tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes. From what I've read both Windows XP and 7 support running two different video card drivers. Vista on the otherhand can only run one video card driver at a time. Does your system correctly show all the ram? I'm running Win 7 x86 but I can get a copy of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit for only 80 bucks.

I upgraded to windows 7 x64 today. 32 bit systems only allow for 4gb of memory(total). Graphics cards are included in that allotment. With a gtx 260, 4gb of ram and a 4770 on its way, I'll be around 5.5 gigs. Please do come back with some news... I'm not expecting my 4770 in until the end of the week so any experiences shared are welcome. I'd like to get as much info out there as possible for others as, through my own research, there isn't much out there regarding the subject and what can be found is dubious in nature.

If that's the case my computer's memory will drop to 2.2GB from 3GB which I can live with until Arcania: A Gothic tale comes out. Just a small price to pay for science.

I have a GTX260 that I run wih twin 5970's in Xfire mode so it is possible.
I also have a 4770 that I run with twin 5970's in xfire mode, so that is possible as well.

You will need a separate dummy plug or monitor ( I use the spare VGA cable) for the second monitor. And also extend the desktop across both screens in Windows.

I have had this config working in both Vista and 7, so you can do it. Getting the right cal driver can be a bit tricky though. 9.12 Hotfix seems stable for me.

Message 36598 - Posted: 17 Feb 2010, 0:42:07 UTC - in response to Message 36595.

I finally got the HD4850 and was able to install it. Windows 7 recognized it and installed the drivers but BOINC won't recognize it. Windows 7 is still reporting 3GB of total system memory. I'm going to follow David's advice and get the stuff needed to make a dummy plug so I can get it and the GTX260 to crunch together.

I went ahead and took the GTX260 out until I get the dummy plug and am now running the HD4850 solo. So far it's roughly crunching MW three times faster than the GTX260! I am, however, noticing a significant graphical lag now.

The HD4850 came with one; I just need to pick up some resistors. I'll have to stop by RadioShack tomorrow after my job interview and pick some up. I'm very impressed by the output I'm seeing out of the HD4850 so far.

FYI, Only in Win...My Linux 64b works fine w/o anything on 2nd card.

Finally was able to get the resistors this morning and made a dummy plug. I put the GTX260 back in and moved the HD4850 to the second PCI-E slot and started the computer back up. This time BOINC instantly recognized both cards and started merrily crunching both MW and GPUgrid work units. Weird when things go right on the first time.

Also as far as the system memory issue goes...With Windows 7 32-bit, my Computer is still reporting the same total 3GB of system ram (with about 1.5GB available/200mb free).

Now I just need to get some cans of compressed air....

Got mine in and working. Used 9.12 hotfix driver as suggested. Running about 3x faster than the 260
