I have quite a few results waiting for validation. Some of these are nearing a week old now.

I think it's the same for all of us. I've got some from a week ago as well.

They should validate (or not) eventually. If you've ever crunched for Einstein@Home, you should be familiar with pending credit. They validate every WU, and since their deadlines are pretty long you can get unlucky and end up with WUs still pending credit from a month ago. It's just the way their system works, and no one complains about it over there; the situation should always be better at Milkyway@Home because the deadlines are much shorter, and they won't validate more WUs than they need to be safe (of course things are still in flux at the moment, but they should settle in the coming weeks).

Those who are or have been regular SETI Crunchers will recognise the issue, as mentioned above its a potential problem in all projects that depend upon a third party - ie a wingman - to validate. The pendings "queue" will grow until it reaches an undefined "equilibrium" of results going in pendings, and those going out matched by a wingman.

With the mega cruncher and fast machines, pendings build very fast because the fast machines finish WUs very fast, and end up waiting for the slower cruncher (lets say as an example an old cpu machine running a cpu app) to throw its result in the ring. At Collatz pendings queues always lengthen after MW crunchers leave after a period there awaiting a MW server issue to be resolved, because a large number of fast machines are no longer there filling pendings, therefore the wait for validation lengthens.

When SETI first introduced the Astropulse WU, much much longer than the traditional SETI WU, pendings of fast mega crunchers went through the roof. One of the fastest Crunchers hit 4.5 million credits waiting in pendings (some 2-4 months old) before it levelled out, and the rate of WUs going into pendings were matched by the rate of WUs going out having been validated.

Difficult to say what the size of the pendings queue will be here, but it will be big for the mega cruncher, its a side effect of the Wingman system.

C'est La Vie :)

Zy

Over the last couple of days my pending queue has reduced considerably. So the servers seem now to be beginning to catch up.

Referring to my OP and the link within it, I'm talking about pending wu's that appear stuck in the system. Wingmen have returned results. The wu's are not marked as inconclusive. They are just stuck at waiting for validation since 7 April.

Are these still happening? Can you link me any culprit WUs/Results?

Here's a couple where I am waiting for validation, wingmen are "inconclusive" but have not been sent out for a tie-breaker:

I did have about a dozen of them last time I looked a couple of days ago - for whatever reason only have one now:

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/workunit.php?wuid=90357637

They appeared all to center around 7 April onwards - when the hassle over the new Validator hit its peak, seems like some that completed 7 April or after got left behind in the switchover, and no wingman was automatically nominated to complete a quorum.

I have 18 WUs sitting around with "validation inconclusive" resp. "waiting for validation" status on my i7:

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/results.php?hostid=129945&offset=0&show_names=0&state=2

The time reported varies from 8 to 14 Apr 2010.
Lovely greetings, Cori

Yours all look fine as they all have others in progress that they'll be validated against as soon as those results are reported. What's weird about the other ones don't have any workunits in progress...

I'm looking into this and I'll see why they aren't validating.

Ah, fine... so that makes just 1 WU left on my list. *grin*

See: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/workunit.php?wuid=91808162

Here me and my wingman are both waiting. ;-)

Here is my list waiting validation ...

No, that's not your pending list :-). It's actually the pending list of the person who happens to click it - provided that person is logged in. If not logged in, I imagine it would be a login screen.

Hover your mouse over the link and you will see what I mean :-).

Cheers,
Gary.

If the wus were sent out to cpus first then to gpus for further validation, then not alot of pending would occur.

Just a thought.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.
