Message 39057 - Posted: 23 Apr 2010, 15:05:19 UTC

The other day I aborted a WU where I had spent 10 hours crunching but the % completed was still on zero.

I had never had that happen before.

Today, it has happened again. I have spent 1.5 hours getting nowhere.

What is happening please?

You probably got one of the "new" v3.01 files. It took my machine 20+ hours to complete the last one (normally MW takes about 10) and it never showed anything other than 0.000%. If you have the patience, just let it run, eventually it gets there. (See other Posts elsewhere.)

Another thing to check, if you were not aware of the option - from BOINC 6.10.35 inclusive, a new option was added to preferences by BOINC. See the processor tab, and look 1/2 way down for option "While processor useage is less than ...."

If that is at 25, set it to zero. A default setting of 25 means if non-BOINC useage of the cpu is greater than 25%, BOINC will suspend the WU. That can, in many Projects, mean (depending on another raft of circumstances), on resume, the WU goes back to zero. That can result in the "never ending WU"

Regards

It is version 3 0.01 so I'll let this one run for up to 25 hours.

However, it also seems to be hogging the processor instead of releasing to another project after an hour. As I have 7 projects, it is taking more than its fair share.

If the progress bar isn't showing there's a good chance it's not checkpointing -- this could also explain the long runtimes, if you're restarting the workunit and can't tell because the progress isn't showing up.

I am not restarting. It has run for over 6 hours continuously instead of the usual 1 hour on and several hours off. The same applied to the one I aborted previously.

If it is relevant I am using Vista Home Premium and dual core. The other core is on Climate Prediction.

So, after 9.5 hours elapsed, time to completion is now zero, but the WU is still running. There are no messages to indicate anything is happening, so I have suspended the task until someone can advise, please.

I'd just abort it. I don't think the version of the application that is running that WU had checkpointing working, so suspending it is essentially a restart.

Thanks, Travis.

When is there likely to be a correctly working version, please?

Should I suspend MW until then? It has happened twice now.

I'm not generating any WUs for the new application at the moment, and the application has been updated to fix that, so it shouldn't happen again.
