hello, I'm having trouble getting the ccc to give me mem clock speeds less than 490 so i was wondering what temps a gpu chip can handle in the ccc help section it has this warning in the overclocking settings help " CAUTION: If a GPU is being used at or close to its maximum capabilities, or if the card is running close to 110 ÂșC, do not increase the GPU or memory clock speeds " can a gpu run safely at 110 degrees ? all mine running thefans rather noisily are keeping the cards between 82 and 85 degrees and i was really worried about that temp I cant add any more case fans the memclocks at 490 lowest i can get it at would anybody give me an opinion on highest safe temps either youve used or have known to be used ? best regards Ian |

Hi Ian I try to keep mine about 85 to 90 degrees for the aircooled boxes. Anything over 100 is bad for lifespan. Although I personally have not tested that theory for long periods. Cheers David |

....I cant add any more case fans the memclocks at 490 lowest i can get it at would anybody give me an opinion on highest safe temps either youve used or have known to be used ? The 5xxx cards happily purr away at around 80-85 degrees as a norm, you can force cool to a lower figure, but there is not much point doing so, its what they are designed to run as when working at pretty well full load. At 100 degrees its time to perk up and do something - definitely too hot :) At 105 degrees the gpu will start to downclock to protect itself. At 120 degrees - it will mutter 'screw you', and kick in the thermal cutout to prevent it melting. I usually use 90 degrees as my "heads up have a look" figure, which gives me plentry of time and space to sort something. Its not going to get near damage until over 100 degrees, even then there is some room to sort things before armagedeon - but very definitely do not ignore 100+, it really is time to do something - before that 90-100 is liveable with in the short term whilst you figure out whats going on. So you should in all events be safe, however its a brave - and frankly silly - person who lets it run 100 degrees as norm, and downright stupid letting it run over 100 degrees as a norm, thermal cut out or not :) Regards Zy |

Would those temperatures be in centigrade or Fahrenheit? The default fan settings on my 5850 seems to only kick in full fan at 105 degrees C, however I've adjusted my settings to keep it under 65degrees at all times... //Svein |

Centigrade The fan should kick in much earlier .... I would take a second look at that, there *might* be an issue lurking on the card, however kicking in 100% at 105 is at least safe baring in mind it would start to downclock one degree later. It definitely seems high number to go 100% .... might be worth nipping over to the AMD/ATI forum and checking it out there EDIT: ATI Forum Regards Zy |

Just use the manual fan setting in the ATI Catalyst Catalyst Control Centre Overdrive section. Mine is set to 60% max fan speed and the temperature keeps below 65C. Go away, I was asleep |

60%? that must sound like a very low altitude multi-engine turboprop be in the house. |

Very little noise, as the background mainly comes from my 6 yearold dual Xeon P4 design based server. Go away, I was asleep |
