I've just noticed that the "reccomended" Boinc manager version is now 6.10.18, wasn't it 6.10.43 a little while ago???

Yes it was, and they found that there were severe problems and fell back ...

Since, as usual, they did not pay any attention to users that report to them they COULD have fallen forward to 6.10.45 which does not seem to have the issue they found in 6.10.43 or the issues we have reported in later versions ...

6.10.45 is the version I am running on all my Windows systems and 6.10.43 on the Mac ... it is also the reason that I keep my own copies of the downloaded installers until I am sure that I am going to push forward to a later version ... usually about a year and 5 versions later before I dump older installers ... in case you find a version that works for you but UCB does not like it (like 6.5.0, as an example, it was one of the best early GPU enabled versions and UCB seemed to detest it, not sure why, it was the best in those days ...)

Forgive a rhetorical question .... almost ..... have you found 6.10.45 ok? I am running 6.10.43, and although I appear to be outside the frame of the .43 bug, I thought a defensive change would be wise

Yes, I am using .45 on all four windows rigs ... .46-.48 have other GPU issues, at least they did for me ... one most common was letting GPUs go idle ... logging was a PITA too because they added a GPU memory test that ran about every 5 seconds it seemed ... did not work either, but that is another story ... in .50 it is supposed to be down to once every 60 seconds ...

Note, I have not yet tried 6.10.50 and so have no personal opinion, though I have seen scattered reports of issues with it as well ... I may try .50 this week end ... I hope to upgrade my last systems to Win7-64 and add in the HD5870 that should be here any moment now ... UPS always seems to deliver late to me, to others on my block the deliveries always seem to come about 10AM ...

I believe it was "1066 and all that" where that was bowdlerised to "Watts pots never Boyle"...

Apparently, the problem with .43 only relates to GPUs. As I have nVidia 7300 I will stick with .43

The bug was related to low end GPUs and work fetching... I don't think your GPU can work on most projects but Collatz works on a surprising variety though I cannot say for sure if it will run on yours ...

Although I don't know his particular card, judging by the name it's a 7-series card (duh I know, just being careful), which preceded the unified shaders required for all GPGPU calculations. I think he knows this though, and meant that since he won't be affected anyway, he's sticking with 6.10.43 for the moment.

No reason not too ... if you are not having problems ... then might as well stick to the devil you know ...

Thanks for all the feedback here. .43 seems to work on all my cards OK, so I'll stick with it. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I usually only upgrade if there is a known bug, or there is extra functionality.
