Message 41872 - Posted: 1 Sep 2010, 16:43:55 UTC

I've been running a 4 GB HD 5970 on an old Intel Core 2 Core system which is doing 2 units every 1 minute 30 seconds and my credit is very high but on another PC which does no GPU work but has an i7 975 it's getting much less credit. So by having the GPU i'm getting 10 times as much credit each day. I thought as they run so quick and so small the credit would also be small?

Am I understanding it wrong or is the GPU processing much better?

Thanks

You should be getting the same credit for each wu completed and validated. And yes the GPU application is optimised extremely well - as is the CPU app, but the GPU is that much faster for this work when compared to the CPU.

So is the same credit for for a CPU or GPU?

Seems pointless waiting 6 hours for a CPU WU when a GPU can do it in 90 seconds and gets the same credit?

Thanks

Which is why most people are moving over to GPU crunching, it simply isn't worth it on CPU's any more :-)

Thanks.. When I look at the credo I see loads omf littles ones then some bigger ones. Are all the little ones from the GPU?

I've put in another HD 5970 without crossfire enabled boinc would only run 2 tasks. With crossfire enabled it runs 4 tasks but they now take 3 minutes where before it was 1 minute 30 seconds per per unit on 2...am i doing it wrong?

Hi Andy,
can you make your computer visible?
BTW, I assume you have 2 graphic-cards in your pc. Is a monitor or dummy-plug attatchet to both cards?

You can check wether or not boinc could identify both cards by looking into the messages. At startup the HW-configuration is checked; 2 graphic-cards should be detected (GPU0 and GPU1)

is there a way i can make the pc to show and not all?

in the messages it picks up GPU0 and GPU1 but as the HD 5970 has two chips I thought I would see GPU3 and GPU4 in device manager I see it as 4.

I tried http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=1844#41114 and put a config file in c:\programdata\boinc but it didnt do anything

thanks

Andy,
I can show how it looks like on my pc:

Since I never had an 5970 I don't know how it is reported. But I'm shure someone else can post this info here.
What about the monitors / dummy-plugs? If a graphic-card has nothing attached to it boinc will not recognize it.

It seems, from calculations, you are getting less work off your rig with 4.

Let me explain -

2 WUs @ 1.50 minutes (90 seconds) means a WU is coming off every 45 seconds a WU comes off (90/2 = 45).

4 WUs @ 3.50 minutes (210 seconds) suggests a WU comes off every 210/4 = 52.5 seconds.
Go away, I was asleep

For dual core cards BOINC should identify both cores, should show something like this near start of BOINC Manager Messages tab for 2 4GB HD 5970s:

ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD5800 series (Cypress) (CAL version 1.4.635, 2048MB, 2509 GFLOPS peak)
ATI GPU 1: ATI Radeon HD5800 series (Cypress) (CAL version 1.4.635, 2048MB, 2509 GFLOPS peak)
ATI GPU 2: ATI Radeon HD5800 series (Cypress) (CAL version 1.4.635, 2048MB, 2509 GFLOPS peak)
ATI GPU 3: ATI Radeon HD5800 series (Cypress) (CAL version 1.4.635, 2048MB, 2509 GFLOPS peak)

CAL version will vary according to which Catalyst driver is installed, GFLOPS peak value will vary according to GPU core speed.

Without dummy plugs if second core of each 5970 goes to sleep, tasks may be run on phantom cores created by BOINC. Thus BOINC Manager may show tasks are being run on all 4 GPU cores but 2 GPU cores will actually be idle. This can be checked in GPU-Z, all 4 GPU cores should have a GPU load percentage in the 90-100 range and no GPU cores should show 0% GPU load.

Personally I recommend the use of dummy plugs for multiple ATI card configurations. They are cheap and easy to make. I could get multiple cards (5970 and a 5870) working by extending the desktop, but one GPU core would always go to sleep if I used a screensaver or turned off the monitor. Dummy plugs solved all my multiple GPU problems.

If you have 2 4GB 5970s there is also a possibility of a memory remap issue.

It is not possible for people to give you the most relevant advice while your computer remains hidden.

Ok I've put the 4 GB HD 5970 in a single PC which is running fine. I've put two HD 5970 2 GB cards into the PC with the problem and unhidden computers from view so you can see them.

I've plugged a monitor in each card and left it on.

CrossFire is currently disabled and it's reporting 4 GPU in messages with the latest drivers.

That's excellent. They should become unhidden when the database updates. It's 1.42am here and I have to get up early tomorrow so someone else will hopefully be able to advise you. If not I will be back here in about 14 hours and have a look.

If the tasks are still taking 3 minutes each instead of 90 seconds you should check with the GPU-Z program that all 4 GPU cores are being used.

I've checked it with GPU-Z and each core is running at 100% load..the system is only doing boinc but the GPU WU time keeps randomly changing between 3 minutes and 6 minutes each :(

I think i'll take 1 card out and leave it working correctly over night...will this cause a problem for you guys looking at the computer properties later on when it shows?
