Is it possible to regulate the amount of GPU usage similar to that of the CPU? ie. 50% |

app_info.xml is what you are looking for. The optimized ATI apps (= same as the regular ATI apps) have an example for it and a readme where it's described how to set it up and what params to use to slow down gpu crunching to get some gpu power back for something else. |

I just installed on Boinc Manager on my PC. However it's running 100% on both my GPU devices (ATI 5980), this is causing the temperature of the card to go sky high and fans to come on etc. Unless ye can put in a fix I'm going to have to remove the milkyway@home altogether :( |

p.s. i'm a noob at this Boinc (but not at computers) ... but still don't follow what you mean about app_info.xml either. Pls explain. |

MW only uses the core clock. It reduces the temps on my overclocked 5870 by almost 10 C. Doing that and having a custom fan profile keeps my GPU at +/- 66 C. M. |

If you only use your gpus to run milkyway or dnetc, you can do like Yakk suggested and save a lot of power (and heat, from gpu memory). The app_info.xml is used to run optimized applications with the anonymous platform mechanism. Here the official and the optimized gpu app are the same; still you can use this mechanism to use command line parameters for the app. Have a look here: http://www.arkayn.us/milkyway/index.html There is an optimized version for your T5600 too. For your i7 use this one http://www.arkayn.us/milkyway/Win64_0.23_ati.zip The included install and readme files should explain how to use it. The w param can be used to throttle the GPU; it will crunch little slower while becoming more responsible again and producing less heat (on the gpu core). That's why I suggested it to marvin to 'regulate the amount of gpu usage'. |

Especially with the very short maximum queue length that I can have with MW I'm hesitant to go the app info route because it would quickly result in my GPU running dry when a new official app was released. To throttle the GPU would I change the value of count here to something slightly less than 1, or would I need to add a new element to the file? <coproc> <type> ATI </type> <count> 1 </count> </coproc> Edit: PS is there a way to keep the indents in the XML from being eaten? |

It get proper graphics performance yes. Otherwise you are bottlenecking your memory performance. (btw ATI's memory controller is one of their strongest points) Y. |

Probably not worth the hassle then. My case is well ventilated enough that my 5870 is running at 65-70C. |

How much of a speedup does the x64 ATI app offer? From one of your validated WU's: Running Milkyway@home ATI GPU application version 0.23 (Win64, CAL 1.4) by Gipsel So you are running the x64 version as regular app. I checked which one you would need before I gave you the link :) Only difference is: With the anonymous platform (app_info.xml) you can play with the params Gipsel did build into it instead of using their defaults (regular app). |
