I wonder how well it works?

I read the 6800 series is the equivalent of the 5700 series, so the 5800 equiv will be the 6900 series.

These cards were slated for sale in November, and it looks like they will hit target.

What makes you think the 68xx series is the equivalent of the 57xx series, TGG?

Is it the price for the new cards, remembering the premium prices asked when the 58xx and 5970 were launched?

As your link clearly states - the 6870 and 6850 are replacements for the 5770 and 5750. But comparisons with the 5850 will still be needed.

So, the assumed 38xx, 48xx and 58xx series of the past stop here.

This will change again with AMD killing off the ATI brand and incorporating this in to their chip design.

From reference data I understand then AMD plan a long term incorporation of the GPU in to the CPU silicon die. This is, I believe, via their Bobcat silicon, and the Zacate version incorporating both CPU and GPU on the same die (according to PCPro).

I am afraid that they don't have double precision...

Any reason to assume that, bearing in mind that no technical details nor performance capabilities have been released. Some of these details may be released today, I believe.

So when the 6900 series comes out (the acutall successor of 5800 series), will users be able to use it on the project? Since it is kind of a revised/matured version of Cypress, it is not expected a major change in design and stream processing.

What is the the approach on that?

Is the lack of DP also found with the HD5770, etc? Can these GPUs be used at Milkyway?

If that is the case, then the lack of DP on the 68xx, a replacement for the 57xx, seems to be in line.

You will have to wait the launch of the 69xx (especially the 6970 and 6950).

HD57xx does not support double precision floating point.

Can these GPUs be used at Milkyway?
No. Double precision is a requirement for MW.

I find it disingenuous that companies change their naming regime like this. I got caught out buying my first graphics card by nvidia and have been off them ever since. Now ATI are playing the same game. Lucky this time I'm older, wiser and more cynical...

Too true. And these days I do. But I got caught up in the marketing hype of the newer higher model number being better than the older lower model number..ha, that taught me a lesson! Lucky it wasn't a very expensive lesson.

Have you seen the write up on the new 6870 and 6850 yet?

These cards are all likely to be very pricey, with the assumption that the HD69xx cards being only for those that have deep pockets.

The 68XX series only have single precision so will be of little interest to anyone at MW. The 5970 costs about £420, lord knows what the 6990 will cost ..... A second mortgage probably !

Do the new ATI HD6850 and HD6870 support double precision? Can I use those on this project?
