Yes, both messages are perfectly normal.

even if they describe state of the same task?

Yes, waiting means simply that, the server is waiting to verify the results.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

This is my understanding of what these messages mean in MilkyWay. Other projects may use these messages differently depending on whether or not there is a quorum and how it works.

"Completed, waiting for validation" is waiting for the server to initially check the task. "Completed, waiting for validation" tasks may have a wingman or not and the number of these tasks usually increases as the server falls behind in validation before it crashes. Sometimes tasks are missed during times of server malfunction and remain in this state after the server starts operating again.

"Completed, validation inconclusive" usually means a task has been initially checked by the server and is now waiting for a wingman to complete. Sometimes after server malfunction another task is not issued to a wingman or the task has been completed and returned by the wingman but the second server check has failed to take place. In these cases the task will remain pending with the message "Completion, validation inconclusive".

So it is normal that tasks may show either message at different times. During the initial wait for the server it shows "Completed, waiting for validation". After initial check by the server the message changes to "Completed, validation inconclusive" which indicates it is waiting on a wingman.

After a server malfunction, when some tasks are missed by the server and go into pending limbo it is possible for 2 wingmen to have the 2 different messages for the same work unit. The wingman that completed and reported the task first may have the message "Completed, validation inconclusive", while the other wingman that completed and reported later has the message "Completed, waiting for validation".

In other words the message you receive for stuck pending tasks may vary depending on whether it is the initial server check that has been missed or the secondary check in the case of work units that have a quorum. So a different message depending on whether you are the first or the last wingman to report the task.

Hi Guys,

I also have three "validation inconclusive" wus. Does anyone know how long it normally takes the server to validate these wus? As one of them took about 2.3 days to calculate I dont want to lose it.

It will take as long as it takes for your wingman to process the WU. If your wingman also is unable to validate the WU, a third wingman will be assigned. Once the quorum requirement is met, it will be validated.

Thanks Mike,

my worry is that I seem to be getting a lot of these inconclusive results but I didn't used to get them before the new software.
