Hi everyone:

I am fed up with my 5770 which does not give a big help in MW and many projects except of collatz.

So I am thinking to replace it with one of the following options:

*- Option No 1 : buying one of the following:

5870
6950
6970

*- Option No 2 : two 5850 SLI.

*- Option No 3: buying one 6970 for ATI MW, and 460 for nivdia supported projects (especially folding)

Waiting for your advice.

Hmm, depends on what you want to do.
If you want to collect as many credits as possible you should buy as many high-end ATI-cards as possible.
If you want to cruch through all GPU-projects, a mix of ATI and nVidia should be your choice.
If you take a look into the near future you will see more and more OpenCL-apps. OpenCL has better support from nVidia; so if you want to be more flexible, nVidia should be your choice.
If energy consumption is of your main interest, ATI should be your choice.
If money is ...
If you are running Vista, a mix of ATI and nVidia is not possible.
It really depends on the mix of your interests and the projects you want to participate, which configuration is the best for you.

You where asking for an advice. Here is mine: you need to make your decision yourself. Sorry!

P.S. You are here in the MW-forum, so the advice has to be: As many ATI-cards as possible ... ;-))

You could get the 6950 and apply the BIOS unlock to make it a 6970 and save a few bucks - what the yeck buy 2 6950's and apply the BIOS unlock to both!

Don't forget the 6970 and 6950 are the latest versions of the 5770 and 5750, none of them has double precision so will not work with Milkyway.

The double precision options, staying with ATI, are the 5870 and 5850, with the latter either as single or in crossfire.

If you think the 6970 does not support double precision then how do you explain my no.1 host in MW with 4 of them?

My bad

I stand fully corrected and the HD6970, and I now suspect the HD6950 as well, support double precision.

A myth on my part.

You were thinking the 68xx series, which replaced the 57xx series.

Reading about this BIOS flashing to unlock the 6950's has me very curious. I believe it might be worth my time/money to build another with everything the same as my no.1 except put (4) 6950's in and flash them to see if the performance is truly a match for the 6970's.
At least for crunching.
I can get 4 for the price of 3 so would be very cost effective if it pans out.
Also, with the upcoming 6990's what exact chip will they be using two of there I wonder? If they do it like the 5970's where it's actually two 5850 although it can be easily over volted and OC to 5870 performance, will it be two 6950's we can bios unlock to double 6970 specs??
I read a lot of complaints about the 6970's but for my money they have been just great as my no.1 host can show, lol.
It's also the best behaving member of my family!

I think I am going to take 2x 6850 and hold the nivdia option right now.

Sorry I wandered there a bit!
Yes of course you want to go with the AMD cards if you plan on effectively crunching here in Milkyway and it looks like the 6950's are the "best bang for the buck" with the BIOS flash.
Again, being a 6970 owner I am very curious to how well that flash will work, Please let us know if/when you do it.

68xx series are NOT DP cards. 5770 does very well in Dnetc but won't work in MW. Crossfire/SLI won't help you and in fact, none of my boxes utilize either.
If I had the $$, I would probably go with 6950 and a flash to 6970.
460's do well in Prime Grid and F@H. As stated, a mix will help in the event a project dries up.
My 2 cents

I am little bit confused here!

Why SLI and crossfire won't help ? specially crossfire ?

BOINC isn't a game and you're not getting FPS. You are working your GPU and in CF or SLI, it does not double your WU credit. Instead, SLI or CF may cause you crunching problems.

If this is correct why most of the people are using crossfire here??

I've read a lot of comments here and elsewhere, and they all agreed that it is faster to crunch using SLI or Crossfire in MW and other projects as it simply divide the WUs on the number of your cards.

Waiting for more info on this issue as I've didn't try it.
