The reason for such tread is that Milkyway@Home has become an unreliable project due to too often server issues.
I did try to hold but my rigs has become useless with no wus available and I shifted to Collatz Conjecture where wu distribution has been almost flawless.

I'm asking the project admins to state a more detailed explanation of the server issues other than the cache bypass, because it is obvious there are other things causing problem.

It is a crunchers responsibility to not break the rules, but it is also the project's responsibility to provide an environment to crunch.

I hope we can figure out what needs to be done. I will be checking the thread frequently. If someone wants to pm me, i will be at collatz.

There have been a number of different issues with the server in recent times. RPI labstaff recently has been understaffed and having troubles keeping the RPI CS account servers up. A while ago there were also some disk failures, and there's some kind of database cleaning going on.

Thank you for the clarification. I was actually asking the times prior to these, because afaik, the server going down has been frequent prior to more than 5 months ago.
The reason for 5 months is that i have been here prior but the shortages happen so frequent, i can't exactly remember when they began to happen this often.

Understaffing= I can understand that.

Disk Failure= Restoring database takes time but if a HDD fails 3 times in a day and causes these? It is hardware but it shouldn't be surprising you such failures might happen. So I believe you have begun to see such frequent failures as part of project and live with it because backup projects via 0% share exists. When i first joined the project, the server outage was happening rarely. But if every HDD you replace cause these issues, than it's a very bad luck...

The Computer Science account server at RPI has crashed, making it hard for us to access the Milkyway@home server.

It doesn't seem like it was Milkyway's own kit that was the problem this time.

Milkyway@Home is a joint effort between Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's departments of Computer Science and Physics, Applied Physics and Astronomy.

Clearly the MW project does not have any responsibility for RPI kit, but if the other Department in the project is also having their work disrupted, then perhaps a joint appeal to RPI management might have some effect.

I think the MW project has been quite stable of late, compared to previous times when I regularly had to crunch DNETC because of a lack of work here. There was a time when these MW forums were among the busiest in Boinc, and bustling with activity, it's a shame that people drifted away because of work issues, and I hope they come back.

I have only recently upgraded my computer to a Nvidia GTX 480 and I have to say that it has been running almost non-stop since last week.

I believe sometimes you have to uninstall even a very good program and let it start all over again.

In my humble opinion, MW is one of the most stable, most efficient projects out there.

(But, to tell the truth, I did get frustrated with MW last year and let it drift off my machine. But now it is easily the best user of the new technology. [My new GTX 480, I could be a bit biased])

72, just in case you do not know, I recommend you take a look at primegrid. I am not trying to push you away from mw--the science here is neat and when running I try to help, but your 480s will have more fruit at primegrid as I see at least one host, single gtx480, at 400k+ per day. again, I am not trying to push you away from mw as politically some get lathered up when at one project suggesting another, but these projects generally favor one of the two (amd or nvidia) and this project favors, at this time, amd. I have amd running this one, currently--when with WUs, and nvidia with primegrid. your gtx 480 is a very good card and your rac with what appears to be two is 8k. I am not suggesting it is all about credit, but something to think about.

with that said, there is more screen lag with primegrid.

I go away when it f---s up, come back when the other project fks up, they all have their own troubles. I actually like mw and it very efficient on ati. As for prime grid, I agree more suited to nvidia but yes the lag is bad.

For me, i was just sick of F@H and all the problems with ATi applications. Their applications are so inefficient; a WU that takes minutes on a GT8800 will take hours on my HD4850, mainly because of poor optimizations in the brook code for the app. Then ATi support came along for BOINC, and guess which project offered the most PPD (or RAC for BOINCers)? Milkyway@home. For my rig, i get more RAC with MW than i do Collatz, and even more than DNETC and Primegrid.

For Nvidia, i would definitely agree that other projects offer more RAC than MW, but in all, it's the science that counts. personally, i find mapping the milkyway more rewarding than trying to prove (or rather, hoping to disprove) a conjecture(collatz), or trying to break a RSA key(dnetc).
