Message 47126 - Posted: 7 Apr 2011, 10:39:49 UTC

Having a problem with my 2 GPUs.
Old GPU is a 8600GTS (260.xx WHQL), new a HD4850 (11.3 WHQL).
The GTS is still getting work, the HD is not recieving any work from the 20 projects running.

the HD is set as primary card, the GTS as secondary.

Wheres the problem?

My rig.

You probably need the following options inside the cc_config.xml (under <options>):

<ignore_ati_dev>0</ignore_ati_dev>
<ignore_cuda_dev>1</ignore_cuda_dev>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>

The 8600 is an old card and doesn't have doubles, so it shouldn't be getting work. It's possible I broke the scheduler too during the server update. Also, you usually have to create cc_config.xml

Thank you so far

Open Notepad - use it at its default opening settings, type the contents and save the file with the .xml extension into the directory that needs it.

Dont use other editors, many insert extra control charactors you cant see but the PC detects and messes it up - Notepad is available to all and easy to use.

Did as mentioned above.

But, what is the directory that needs the .xml file?
The BOINC-folder at program data or the milkyway-folder?

No, cc_config.xml goes in the BOINC data folder.

I am guessing that you want to use both cards on various projects so you would really only want the <use_all_gpus> option in the file.

before fiddling around with a cc_config.xml, you should try to figure out why the boinc client doesn't detect the ATI card in the first place...

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/show_host_detail.php?hostid=142267

Does it show up in the messages tab when starting the client (my guess, it does not) ?

It does in NONE of the running projects!

Since the AMD GPU is "working" as primary card, the NV GPU causes lots of "error while computing" messages.

May be these 2 problems are relating?

Did so. Problem not relieved.

Did not help, too.

@ Crunch3r
How to get BOINC noticed of the HD4850? Or even the projects, so that BOINC would work with the AMD GPU, too?

Are both cards connected to a display?
If not, try using a dummy plug on the card which is not connected.
Directions how to build yourself a dummy plug can be found on the net.
This helped for me (2 ATI, 1Nvidia card)

You have two cards - 8600 & 4850. The 8600 will not crunch the WUs (see Matts post a few posts above). So, game plan is to get the 8600 driving the screen and the 4850 crunching for you. At present BOINC is not seeing any card. So take it steps ...

First put the 8600 in slot zero on the motherboiard, take out the 4850, and get the machine solid, running windows ect. Dont try anything else at the same time. First job is get the hardware recognised in the correct places, we can work on BOINC and software etc later.

So put the 8600 in slot zero (Primary Card as far as windows is concerned), and place the 4850 in another slot (a x4 or x8 slot, not the x1), then come back to the board to say hardware is set and recognised by Windows. Dont worry about BOINC for the moment.

In case I'm away from the board when you come back - game plan is:

(Do not move on to any stage, until its 110% certain previous stage successful)

Print this out in case your PC falls over and you need to know "what next"

1. Install both cards as above, get screen running on 8600

2. Check latest drivers loaded on both cards. If you do a total driver reload - highly likely and preferable - load the Nvidia driver first get screen running on it, when stable close down, then reopen and load the AMD driver for the 4850 - you must load the AMD driver with APP set, APP is essential for MW. You may need to use a dummy plug on the 4850, try without, see what happens. When done, check Windows recognises both cards in place, both drivers in device manager.

3. Load BOINC, use 6.12.22 (its Beta software, but will do you fine and has much better GPU control than 6.10.60) - you can download that from here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=D
You need this one: boinc_6.12.22_windows_intelx86.exe
Dont attempt to load any projects at this stage, but connect to a BOINC manager. If it asks/moans about Projects, refuse dont attatch any yet.

4. Go into the BOINC Client and check at the start of messages that it saw and recognised the 8600 & 4850.

5. Create and load the cc_config.xml as discussed above, placing it in the MilkyWay Directory. Suggest you copy paste what you are about to load as a cc_config to the board so we can check contents.

6. Now pause and test that all is recognised as it should be once more before loading any projects (trying to avoid trashing a load )

7. Now attatch to milkyway (no other for the present), get that running on the 4850.

8. Select a project that will use the 8600 (milkyway will not), load their WUs , get that running.

Your done.

Take it step by step ...... its not a speed contest, and only do one step at a time. Come back to the board refering to the numbers above on each step so that we know where you are, and what stage you are at.

Regards

1.) For the last few days, only the HD4850 was running. =>no change

2.) I stopped all projects, let the last WUs get finished and reinstalled BOINC. => no change

3.) I posted the same problem at boincstats. Followed the instructions of the link Gundolf Jahn gave me using the cc_config.xml I found there. => no change

4.) Remembered, that there were driver problems with any Catalyst since 10.11. Deinstalled 11.3 and installed 10.9.
=> a) remembered, that this was emntioned within thread Gundolf Jahn linked me
=> b) problem with the HD4850 solved so far! *YEAH!!!*

5.) Trying to get the 8600GTS working again without "error while computing" problems! => lets do it ...

Edit:
The 4850 produces lots of "error while computing" WUs ... damn ...

Edit1:
The 4850 is now recognized by BOINC. Don't know if it was before but guess not.
Installing 8600 now.
