So apparently my GTX580 has recently lost it's double precision capability...

I'm running the latest pre-release BOINC (7.0.14 as of this writing) and I know they have been fiddling with the OpenCL detections with the recent versions. I'm also using the latest nVidia beta drivers (295.51 x64) so either could be at fault I suppose.

I would not run the 295.51 drivers as there is a known issue with DVI connections disconnecting when the monitor goes to sleep.

You might try using the app_info setup and see if that allows processing of the work.

I haven't encountered any problems with these drivers. This particular machine is a sort of testbed where I run the bleeding edge versions of most software unless I run into problems.
This isn't a serious issue as the GPU is fully utilized by other projects, but I was wondering if anyone had an idea where in the software chain the problem originates...

I see you've at least gotten work with 6.12. If you have 7 the detailed OpenCL information is used for the device check instead of the old stuff. I haven't tried using Nvidia with a BOINC 7 client yet so that part of the scheduler might be wrong; you should still be fine with 6.12.

Alternatively the OpenCL extensions aren't being reported by the BOINC version. It's either a project scheduler problem or BOINC 7 problem

My other machine is running "stable" and is using the 6.12.34 version. It is running fine. Both machines have an nVidia GPU, but otherwise they are different softwarewise.
I personally also suspect the pre-release BOINC. The last three versions have all had changes to the OpenCL detection and reporting.

I was discussing this problem in the Separation thread in the news section.
My Catalyst are new (12.1) and BM is 7.0.14.
At this point, as I was writing there, maybe we have to open a bug ticket at BOINC/trac?

In another thread he just told me that he fixed some bugs in his scheduler.

I appear to be having this issue with my computer too and have had for some time but didn't check into it until just now. Some jobs will run just fine for the project, but at other times, I get the error message that GPU lacks necceary double precision extension just like others were having back about a year ago. Decided to research it tonight and found this thread.

my computer's id with the project is 453339. NO NVIDIA here...and I just recently updated my amd catalyst graphics as was having some problems with Poem@home and it was pointed out that I had old graphics so now those are updated and that fixed my problems there, but it hasn't fixed this issue(thought worth a mention in case it might be something to consider as part of the problem).

Any suggestions?

Did it used to work here? It looks like one of those built into the cpu gpu's and Boinc just isn't seeing it. Have you tried upgrading to the latest Alpha version of Boinc, ver 7.0.45 available here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=D as the newest versions tend to add more support for more cpu/gpu combinations then the older versions.

It also says it only has 512mb of ram, I haven't checked the specs, I don't know where they are, but could it be too little? It must be physical ram too, not added on ram like the old laptops could do.

Thankyou for the info on the updated versions - I've found that it pays to use them and I wasn't aware that they had been updated recently so am grateful for the info.

As to the ram, will have to find out if it can be expanded on this computer...just had a problem with another program desireing more ram than I had available too and it puzzled me too so I need to see why this less than a year old computer is running low on RAM memory for projects all of a sudden.

As I said gpu ram CANNOT be extended and used for gpu crunching, what the card has built in is all Boinc will see and use.
