Hello Everyone:
I wanted to briefly inform interested parties about the current SETI at Home outage.
The outage occurred on Monday night due to unknown reasons. The service should be restored Thursday afternoon this week. It's currently unclear when the project will come back online. We'll keep everyone updated to any changes.

Thanks for the heads up. As well as S@H the BOINC pages are down as well.

Hopefully the outage will be fixed soon as my SETI cache is dwindling. Never mind "what you lose on the roundabouts you make on the swings" and MW@H will get the benefit.

It took out the entire hill and they are still working on the problem.

Here's a quick update on the outage for interested parties:

A 15kV underground power line heading from the campus power substation to the hill that houses the SETI at Home lab shorted out around 2030 on Tuesday night. PG&E, the local power company, has spent the last two days crawling the line from manhole to manhole looking for the problem. Apparently while looking for the first short, they managed to cause another short in the line.

PG&E has suggested power should be back working this (Thursday) afternoon however understandably this may not happen on schedule. Please also keep in mind that it may take some time for the lab to get back into full swing due to this unexpected shutdown.

Thanks go to Dr. Eric Korpela for the above information and for taking the time to fill us in.

Warmly,

Brad Deauman.

Update: Thursday, May 17, 2012 4:45 pm: IST Service Desk has been informed that general power is still unavailable.

They are up, but it will be a slow process to get back running fully again.

Yes they are up again, even in faraway Scotland. I have a couple of failed downloads but I will leave them for the moment until everybody has a chance to settle down.

Yes, they had a couple of hours warning this time and made an orderly shutdown. PG&E (local utility company) is replacing some of the underground power cables that serve the Space Sciences Lab and several other buildings at the campus. Guess the fix for the shorted cable that caused the unplanned downtime two weeks ago was not considered permanent enough to suit them. The university's site is not providing status reports this time, but the project said they expect to be back up by Thursday 1700 UTC.

Found some info on the BOINC site for those who may be trying to reach it - it's located in the same building as SETI. The website was partially available today. You could download BOINC software, but no forums, etc. because the database was not running.

Richard Haselgrove posted the following info on a team's website:

This time, the BOINC servers and website will be able to stay up at least part of the time. Their outage (times in PDT) was posted as

Due to a planned power outage, the BOINC web site will be down tomorrow (Wed 30 May) from:
3:45 AM to 11:00 AM
5:00 PM to 8:00 AM the next day.
Two reasons for the difference:

1) SETI is a complicated beast with lots of interconnected servers. It's best if they're powered down carefully (and in the right order) while the staff are on-site, and powered back on again the same way.

2) "Two big temporary generators got moved into the SSL parking lot today. The lab has enough back-up generator power for Isaac [the BOINC server] and for the lab routers and switches, but not enough to keep seti@home up."

So the BOINC site should be partially up tomorrow morning, and hopefully will be all the way back later in the morning.
