There are many threads here that GPUs are not getting enough work. Well I have kind of the opposite problem.
Up to now I have used my HD4850 to crunch Moo, the card's fan would rev to about 10k rpm, which I cannot hear too much (or I've gotten used to), temp to 90°C.
I actived GPU on MW recently, and now the fan has to spin to 14k rpm to maintain 108°C. In both cases the GPU load is reported to 100%, so I guess MW is using more of it.
Now I can clearly hear the fan, the case's fans have to blow more air too, so it's all quite noisy when MW runs. I am a little worried of the temp level too.

-> Is it possible to throttle down the GPU calculations?
Not cycling, that kind of noise is even worse.

I'm not sure, since I use an app_info file for such stuff, but if you set in the web preferences "Period (in milliseconds) to check for scene updates" to something like 10, that should already decrease the load quite a bit (I hope that's the equivalent to gpu-pooling-mode).

Have you checked the card for dust bunnies and eventually removed them? 108°C is indeed a bit too close to killing the card for my taste and very unusual for propely cooled card (in a properly cooled system), so you should definitely check the cooling (also if the cooler is still properly sitting on the card, I had once a card, on which it started to fall off after a couple of years).

I think one reason you are hearing more fan noise is that the card is using its double precision capability to crunch Milky Way. That causes more heat to be generated, thus more fan use. Moo! does not use DP so the card will run cooler and quieter even though it shows 100% load. Depending on what you are using to control your card, Catalyst, etc. you may be able to set a target temp to keep your card running at a lower temp. For Milky Way, you can underclock your memory speed and cut down on the excess heat production.

I use an app_info file to throttle back my GPU when running MW. I'm at work now but I'll post it for you when I get home this evening. And FWIW I agree with Link. Running your card @ 100+ will probably kill it quickly
