The latest Windows 10 update causes some problems affecting BOINC users.

First, it disables OpenCL use, at least for my GT 440. Installing the Nvidia version of the most recent graphics driver enables it again, though.

Second, it installs Skype. The last time I tried installing Skype on my Windows 10 desktop, just having it installed (even it not running) slowed down all other programs by about 50%, so I uninstalled it soon afterwards. I haven't seen anything yet on whether the version this update installs fixes this slowdown problem.

Another problem with less effect on BOINC:

It changed your default browser without your permission. For me, changing it back worked, though.

I am having a different problem after switching to Windows 10 and BOINC 7.6.22 BOINC manager shows my WUs completing in just a few seconds and all erroring out. I've made no other changes. Anyone have any ideas what I need to do?

Some BOINC projects now require you to download and install the latest runtime package for C++ in order to run under Windows 10; this does NOT happen automatically.

I've lost the information on where to find this package, though.

I have never done this, can anyone point in the right direction?

Alas, it did not work. I installed the x86 version and it made no difference at all. Do I need to do anything other than what it will by default?

Here is where I am with my current set-up:
HD5870
Catalyst 15.7.1
MS C++ Runtime package installed
Win 10

All WU complete is less than 10 seconds and error out.
I'm running out of ideas how to get going again.

I've seen one BOINC project that requires you to install an AMD SDK. Here is the latest version:

APP SDK – A Complete Development Platform
http://developer.amd.com/tools-and-sdks/opencl-zone/amd-accelerated-parallel-processing-app-sdk/

No need to do anything with it except leave it installed.

Also, do you know how to find the log file of a workunit after it has been reported back to a BOINC project? If you can find it, but cannot tell what it means, copying it to this forum would allow other users to look at it also.

You might check if you have the latest driver available for that graphics card.

Download AMD Radeon Software (drivers for Radeon, FirePro, APU, desktops, laptops)

http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Some of their driver installations work better if you tell them to uninstall the old driver first.

Thank you. I installed the AMD SDK but there is no change.
Not sure exactly what you mean by the WU log file but my computer is not hidden and one can see the invalid WUs in my tasks. The portion of the stderr output that catches my eye is:
Unhandled Exception Detected...

- Unhandled Exception Record -
Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x00007FF9137DD8A0 read attempt to address 0x00000010

but I do not know what this means.

Try this:

Go to the website:

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/

Click on the blue Your account link.

Click on the blue View link in the Tasks line.

Choose one of the tasks and click on the Task number in the left column.

Scroll down until you see the Stderr output section.

The most important information is probably near the bottom of this section, starting with the first error message.

The stderr lines you quoted suggest that people with access to the application's source code may be the only ones who can use these lines, since some output files from a special compile are needed to tell what is being done at the address of the failure.

I looked at the stderr file for one of your tasks. What I saw indicates that one of the input files is messed up, probably one that is being saved from one workunit to the next, and probably an XML file. Therefore, something else to try is to go to the Projects window of BOINC Manager, click on Milkyway@Home, then click on Reset project in the Commands column. This should make your computer download the files again, and hopefully correct any problems with the input files.

Thanks for your help. Where you suggest is where I got the info I quoted.

Instead of resetting the project, I did a complete detach/reattach. No change.

Something that might help other people look for a cause:

In BOINC Manager, click on Tools, then Event Log. Scroll up to the top of the log. If the first message begins with Starting BOINC, select that line, then scroll down until you see the first line with a project name in the Project column, then hold down the Shift key while clicking on the last line before the one with the project name. Click on Copy selected. Then paste what this copied into your next message here.

If the fist message does not begin with Starting BOINC, click on Activity, then Suspend, then File, then Exit BOINC. Once this shuts BOINC down, restart it and try the above again.

Then click on Activity, then Run based on preferences.
