Crunching numbers without a GPU

Folks. I am running several projects in BOINC and only have one GPU. Several of my programs require GPU's it seems so I can only one run at a time. I do have a 6 core processor. Is it possible to crunch numbers for this project with just 1 CPU and no GPU? Mike. |

Of course. If you check Milkyway applications page, you will see that every GPU app has its CPU version. And N-Body applications are actually only CPU. http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/apps.php |

Is it possible to crunch numbers for this project with just 1 CPU and no GPU? Yes in fact all of the Projects listed when I click on your name have cpu apps that you can crunch. But be aware that Boinc does not allow fine tuning itself enough for we users to chose to run one app from this Project, 3 apps from that Project and 1 app from another Project for example. It tends to bounce back and forth between the Projects based on a formula built into Boinc. |

Yes. It's getting a little complicated for me. I think I will just let the BOINC Manager let the GPU based work cycle through one at a time. Cosmology@Home is crunching 11 files concurrently and the GPU based ones are taking their turn using 1 CPU and the 1 GPU. Mike. |

Yes. It's getting a little complicated for me. I think I will just let the BOINC Manager let the GPU based work cycle through one at a time. Cosmology@Home is crunching 11 files concurrently and the GPU based ones are taking their turn using 1 CPU and the 1 GPU. Yes that's very common, when the Cosmology ones are finished Boinc will swap to the other projects and try to balance things out thru your daily RAC. RAC means 'recent average credit', but in this case Boinc uses 'dac' or 'daily average credit' in it's computations. It's complicated and clunky but it does work over the long run. Think of RAC as a speedometer, it shows how many credits you are averaging right now, if your pc takes a break, or runs some extremely long units like Cosmology can have, it will go down, while projects that give more credit per workunit and take less time per workunit will make it go up quicker. |

Does Milkyway@home only use 11 CPU required tasks. They seem to be the only ones I get and when my BOING Manager switches projects they take all but one of my CPU's. Mike. |

Does Milkyway@home only use 11 CPU required tasks. They seem to be the only ones I get and when my BOING Manager switches projects they take all but one of my CPU's. I believe the 'n-body' workunits take all the cpu's cores you have while the other kinds of workunits do not. Some people can run the n-body units with no troubles while others have problems with them. |
